The BJP secured a commanding mandate by winning 206 out of 294 Assembly seats, comfortably crossing the majority mark and emerging as the principal political force in Bengal for the first time in the party’s history. The result is being viewed as one of the BJP’s most significant electoral breakthroughs in recent years and a major turning point in national politics.

With preparations for government formation now underway, attention has shifted toward the selection of the next chief minister and the structure of the first BJP-led cabinet in Bengal.

Among all potential contenders, Suvendu Adhikari has emerged as the strongest frontrunner for the chief minister’s post. His rapid rise within Bengal politics over the last several years has transformed him into one of the BJP’s most influential regional leaders.

According to party sources, senior BJP leadership is expected to hold key consultations before formally announcing the legislative party leader. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has been appointed the BJP’s central observer for West Bengal and is personally overseeing the transition process.

Shah is expected to arrive in Kolkata following official engagements in Bihar and will conduct a series of meetings with newly elected MLAs, senior state leaders and BJP core committee members ahead of the crucial legislative party meeting scheduled for May 8.

The legislative meeting is expected to formally elect the BJP’s Assembly leader, who will subsequently be sworn in as the next chief minister of West Bengal.

Swearing-In Ceremony Planned at Brigade Parade Ground

The BJP is preparing for a grand swearing-in ceremony likely to take place on May 9 at Kolkata’s historic Brigade Parade Ground.

Administrative officials have already intensified preparations for the event, reviewing security arrangements, seating logistics and crowd management protocols ahead of what is expected to become one of the largest political ceremonies in recent Bengal history.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, BJP national president Nitin Nabin and multiple chief ministers from NDA-ruled states are expected to attend the ceremony.

Party strategists reportedly view the formation of a BJP government in Bengal as a symbolic political milestone, demonstrating the party’s expansion into a region long considered difficult terrain for the BJP.

The party’s sweeping mandate has not only altered Bengal’s internal political structure but has also significantly strengthened the BJP’s position across eastern India ahead of future national political contests.

Suvendu Adhikari Emerges Strongest CM Contender

Suvendu Adhikari’s emergence as the leading chief ministerial candidate reflects his growing influence within Bengal BJP politics.

Once regarded as one of Mamata Banerjee’s closest associates within the Trinamool Congress, Adhikari joined the BJP in 2020 and gradually became the face of the party’s anti-TMC campaign in the state.

His political stature rose sharply after defeating Mamata Banerjee in the high-profile Nandigram contest during the 2021 Assembly elections.

In 2026, Adhikari further strengthened his image as a major BJP leader by defeating Banerjee again, this time in the politically symbolic Bhabanipur constituency, long considered a Trinamool Congress stronghold.

Political observers believe the Bhabanipur victory significantly boosted Adhikari’s standing within the BJP leadership because of its symbolic and strategic importance.

Analysts credit Adhikari’s aggressive campaign strategy, grassroots organisational control and ability to consolidate anti-TMC sentiment as key factors behind the BJP’s sweeping victory across the state.

Despite the intense speculation surrounding his candidature, Adhikari has publicly stated that he is not “power hungry” and remains committed to serving Bengal irrespective of the position assigned to him.

BJP Discusses Cabinet Balance and Deputy Chief Ministers

Alongside discussions regarding the chief ministerial face, BJP leaders are also actively considering the composition of the new cabinet.

According to party insiders, the leadership may appoint deputy chief ministers as part of a broader balancing strategy aimed at ensuring regional, caste and social representation within the government.

The BJP is reportedly attempting to create a cabinet structure combining experienced organisational leaders with emerging political faces.

Representation from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes is expected to play an important role during ministerial appointments.

Several BJP leaders have emerged prominently during internal discussions.

State BJP president Samik Bhattacharya is being viewed as a crucial organisational figure because of his role in strengthening the BJP’s booth-level structure and cadre mobilisation during the elections.

Agnimitra Paul has also enhanced her profile after retaining Asansol Dakshin with a strong margin. Party leaders reportedly believe her electoral performance and public communication skills make her a strong candidate for an important cabinet role.

Actor-turned-politician Rupa Ganguly has similarly emerged as a prominent face after winning from Sonarpur Dakshin.

Mamata Banerjee Rejects Defeat Narrative

While the BJP celebrates its victory, the Trinamool Congress has adopted a confrontational political stance following the election outcome.

Mamata Banerjee reportedly held a meeting with newly elected MLAs and senior party leaders at her Kalighat residence, where she criticised the election process and alleged large-scale irregularities.

According to party sources, Banerjee stated that she would not resign voluntarily as chief minister and challenged the Centre to dismiss her government if it intended to do so.

She described the election as a “black day” for democracy and claimed that the Trinamool Congress remained “morally victorious” despite the electoral defeat.

Banerjee also alleged that more than 1,500 Trinamool Congress offices had been “captured” after the election results and accused the BJP of misusing central security forces during the polls.

The TMC chief urged party workers and legislators to wear black clothes during the opening session of the new Assembly as a symbolic protest.

She additionally asserted that the election outcome had strengthened unity within the INDIA opposition bloc and promised that the Trinamool Congress would continue resisting the BJP politically in Bengal.

Political Tensions Rise After Killing of BJP Leader’s Aide

Political tensions escalated further following the murder of Chandranath Rath, a close aide and executive assistant to Suvendu Adhikari.

Rath was reportedly shot dead near Madhyamgram shortly after the election results were announced, triggering a major political controversy across the state.

BJP leaders accused the Trinamool Congress of fostering political violence and demanded a thorough investigation into the killing.

The Trinamool Congress rejected the allegations and urged political parties not to politicise the investigation.

Police officials have since intensified security measures across sensitive districts while continuing forensic examinations and raids related to the case.

The incident has further heightened tensions during Bengal’s politically sensitive transition period.

Bengal Enters a New Political Era

The BJP’s victory in West Bengal is widely being viewed as one of the most consequential political developments in contemporary Indian politics.

For decades, Bengal remained among the BJP’s most difficult electoral battlegrounds despite the party’s expansion elsewhere in India. The 2026 result has fundamentally altered that equation.

The mandate is expected to influence not only Bengal’s future political direction but also national political strategies ahead of upcoming parliamentary contests.

As the state prepares for the formal transfer of power, intense political negotiations, cabinet discussions and administrative planning are expected to continue over the coming days.

Whether Suvendu Adhikari ultimately becomes Bengal’s first BJP chief minister or the party leadership surprises observers with another choice, the 2026 Assembly election has already ushered in a completely new chapter in Bengal politics.
