A deadly Israeli airstrike has forced humanitarian aid organizations to halt operations in the Gaza Strip, leaving many Palestinians in dire need. World Central Kitchen (WCK) and Anera, both US-based charities, have suspended their activities due to escalating risks faced by their staff following the killing of seven aid workers in the strike.
WCK, which was providing two million meals a week across Gaza, paused its operations after a convoy was targeted by the Israeli military. The strike not only claimed the lives of aid workers but also disrupted a maritime aid corridor from Cyprus, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region.
The Norwegian Refugee Council warned that the attack on WCK jeopardizes the entire aid system in Gaza. WCK accused the Israeli military of a “targeted attack” on clearly marked vehicles, despite prior coordination with Israeli authorities.
Lt Gen Herzi Halevi, Israel’s military chief of staff, admitted the strike was a “grave mistake” caused by misidentification. He pledged immediate action to protect aid workers and emphasized that Israel’s conflict is with Hamas, not the people of Gaza.
However, aid groups remain skeptical of such promises, citing previous incidents of aid workers being killed since the conflict began. Jan Egeland of the Norwegian Refugee Council highlighted WCK’s close cooperation with Israeli authorities, suggesting that the attack was not an isolated incident.
The suspension of WCK’s operations has grave implications for Gazans, as malnutrition and hunger continue to claim lives, particularly among children. Calls have been made for Israel to open border crossings to allow direct aid deliveries to northern Gaza, where the need is most urgent.
Despite the challenges, some aid organizations, like Medical Aid for Palestinians and Action Against Hunger, are determined to continue their work amid heightened security concerns. However, the broader international community is urged to push for a humanitarian ceasefire to facilitate the delivery of aid and alleviate the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza.
Meanwhile, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) is calling for a reversal of Israeli policies restricting aid delivery to northern Gaza. Israel has accused UNRWA of supporting Hamas, further complicating efforts to address the humanitarian crisis in the region.
