Ahmedabad police have seized cash, gold, and luxury items worth over ₹100 crore from a flat in the city’s Paldi area, rented by Mumbai-based share trader Meghkumar Shah. The raid was conducted following a tip-off about the presence of smuggled foreign gold at the premises.
The operation, led by Superintendent of Police SL Chaudhary, uncovered a staggering 107.5 kg of gold, including 87.9 kg in gold bars and 19.6 kg of jewellery. Notably, 52 kg of the gold bars bore foreign markings, suggesting they had been smuggled into the country. The jewellery haul included pieces adorned with diamonds and other precious and semi-precious stones, adding to the high valuation of the recovered items.
Apart from gold and jewellery, the police also discovered 11 high-end luxury watches, one of which was studded with diamonds. Additionally, cash amounting to ₹1.37 crore was recovered from the flat, further intensifying suspicions of illegal financial activities linked to the case.
Authorities have initiated legal proceedings under Section 123 of the Customs Act, as Meghkumar Shah’s relatives, who were present at the time of the raid, failed to produce valid documentation to justify the possession of the seized valuables. Investigators are currently tracing the source of the foreign-marked gold and probing possible connections to organized smuggling networks.
Officials suspect the involvement of a larger syndicate operating behind the scenes, facilitating the illegal movement of high-value assets across borders. The ongoing probe aims to uncover the broader nexus and identify all individuals involved in the smuggling operation.
The Ahmedabad police, in coordination with customs and other enforcement agencies, are working to determine the full extent of the illegal transactions linked to this seizure. Further raids and arrests are expected as authorities dig deeper into the case.
The incident has once again brought attention to the growing concerns over gold smuggling in India, which continues to be a significant challenge for law enforcement agencies. With high customs duties and fluctuating global gold prices, illegal gold trade remains an attractive option for smugglers seeking to evade taxes and maximize profits.
As investigations progress, authorities are expected to reveal more details about the network behind the seized assets, shedding light on the broader ramifications of gold smuggling and financial crimes in the country. This case serves as a major breakthrough in law enforcement’s efforts to curb illegal gold trade and money laundering activities.
