Rising India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal’s decision to leave Mumbai and join Goa for the upcoming domestic season has caused a stir in Indian cricket circles. According to a report by India Today, the flashpoint came after a Ranji Trophy match against Jammu & Kashmir when Yashasvi Jaiswal’s performance was underwhelming and his intent was questioned by Rahane and Salvi. Frustrated, Yashasvi Jaiswal reacted by kicking Rahane’s kit bag. This outburst wasn’t an isolated incident. In the 2023 Duleep Trophy final, Ajinkya Rahane, captaining West Zone, had previously ordered Yashasvi Jaiswal off the field for repeated sledging, which the young batter refused to stop despite umpire warnings. These episodes reflect a deep-seated tension and a pattern of disciplinary clashes between the two.
Yashasvi Jaiswal’s limited participation in Mumbai’s domestic games in recent seasons added to the friction. Despite making himself available for a key Ranji Trophy match against J&K, where both he and India captain Rohit Sharma were required to play under BCCI guidelines, Yashasvi Jaiswal failed to deliver, scoring no runs in both innings. Mumbai suffered a shock defeat, and although they reached the semi-finals, Yashasvi Jaiswal left the team before the crucial clash against Vidarbha.
This decision didn’t go down well with selectors. Sanjay Patil, Mumbai’s chief selector, criticized international players for merely showing up and not being invested in domestic cricket. Yashasvi Jaiswal later confirmed his switch to Goa, citing a leadership opportunity as the primary reason.
