On Friday evening, a violent incident unfolded on a bus in Siegen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, resulting in five passengers being injured after a woman attacked them with a knife, local police confirmed.
The woman responsible for the attack has been arrested, according to authorities. Police reported that three of the injured individuals are in life-threatening condition. The bus was carrying at least 40 other passengers at the time of the incident, but no further danger is posed, as confirmed by the police.
According to German newspaper Bild, the attacker is believed to be a German national, with indications suggesting that she may have been struggling with mental health issues and possibly under the influence of drugs. Police have clarified that they do not suspect terrorism as a motivating factor in this attack.
This incident comes just days after a separate violent attack in Solingen, where a Syrian man confessed to stabbing three people to death and injuring several others at a festival in the western German city, as reported by CNN, citing police sources.
The Solingen attack resulted in the deaths of two men, aged 67 and 56, and a woman, aged 56. The incident shocked the nation and prompted opposition parties to call for stricter immigration laws. The 26-year-old suspect in that case has been accused by German prosecutors of being a member of ISIS. The terrorist group claimed responsibility for the attack through its Amaq news agency, although no evidence was provided to substantiate the claim.
Prosecutors stated that the suspect in the Solingen incident acted out of “radical Islamist convictions” and intended to kill as many people as possible at the city festival.
Following a significant manhunt, the suspect in Solingen turned himself in, reportedly telling officers, “I’m the one you’re looking for,” while covered in blood, according to the Bild report cited by CNN.
