  • India strikes major terror hubs after Pahalgam attack kills 26.
  • Global leaders urge restraint, diplomacy after India's precision strike.

India has responded to attacks from Pakistan in the past with military strikes, most notably in 2016 with the Uri attack and in 2019 with the Balakot airstrikes. However, Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7, 2025, stands apart in its scale, purpose, and the emotional tribute it pays to the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack that occurred on April 22, 2025.

A Wide-Ranging and Strategic Response

Operation Sindoor marked a significant shift from previous strikes. Unlike the 2016 Uri and 2019 Balakot operations, which were relatively limited in scope, Operation Sindoor targeted multiple locations — nine to be exact — across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The operation took out terror bases in key locations including Bahawalpur, Muridke, Sialkot, Muzaffarabad, Kotli, Gulpur, Bhimber, Bagh, and Chak Amru.

India launched 24 missile strikes, the highest number of strikes in a single day so far. This broad and synchronized assault on nine terror zones sent a clear message that no location associated with terrorism in Pakistan is safe. The strikes also differed from Balakot, where India targeted only one location — a Jaish-e-Mohammed terror camp in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The operation’s scale and precision underscore India’s strategic shift toward long-range, high-impact counterterrorism measures. In addition to missiles, the operation made use of advanced weapons like SCALP cruise missiles, HAMMER precision-guided bombs, and loitering munitions.

The Emotional Tribute: Operation Sindoor’s Name

The operation was named “Operation Sindoor” by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a decision that carried immense emotional significance. Sindoor, the vermillion powder traditionally worn by Hindu women as a symbol of marriage, became the symbolic marker for this military strike. Sindoor represents marital bonds and the commitment to protect loved ones, and the name was chosen in remembrance of the 25 widows created by the Pahalgam terror attack, who lost their husbands in the most brutal and heart-wrenching way.

The naming of the operation was a tribute to the women who were widowed and the families shattered by the violence. PM Modi personally oversaw the planning of the operation, ensuring that the response would serve as justice for those who lost their lives in Pahalgam.

A Tribute to the Victims

The choice of the name “Sindoor” holds deep meaning, as it is more than just a military mission. It resonates with the families who were affected by the attack. For Pragati Jagdale, whose husband was among the victims, the operation provided closure and a sense of justice. She expressed her gratitude to PM Modi for recognizing their pain and taking decisive action.

Similarly, Ashanya Dwivedi, widow of Shubham Dwivedi, another victim of the Pahalgam attack, thanked the government for avenging her husband’s death. Many of the widows of the attack expressed that the name “Sindoor” was a fitting tribute to their lost husbands, and the response from the government showed that their suffering was not forgotten.

The Military Execution of Operation Sindoor

Operation Sindoor saw the coordinated efforts of the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, marking it as a combined tri-service strike. The operation involved high-precision weapons like SCALP missiles, HAMMER bombs, and loitering munitions, which hit terror infrastructure at deep locations across Pakistan and PoK.

The strikes were carefully coordinated to avoid detection and maximize their impact, showcasing India’s advanced military technology and capability for precise, swift action. The operation’s timing, scale, and the decision to target deep within Pakistani territory were a departure from India’s previous military doctrine, highlighting a more assertive approach.

After the strikes, India maintained that the response was measured and non-escalatory, with no Pakistani military installations targeted. Instead, the focus was solely on terror infrastructure, signaling that India was committed to justice while maintaining strategic restraint to avoid further escalation.

The Global Reaction to Operation Sindoor

The world’s reaction to Operation Sindoor has been mixed, with different nations calling for restraint and expressing concerns about further escalation.

* The United States has called for a quick resolution to the conflict, with President Trump expressing hope that hostilities end soon. Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed similar sentiments, urging both India and Pakistan to work towards a peaceful resolution.

* The United Nations called for military restraint from both sides, highlighting the importance of avoiding a full-scale military confrontation between the nuclear-armed nations.

* China and Japan both urged India and Pakistan to de-escalate tensions, with China emphasizing the need for calm and Japan advocating for dialogue to prevent a larger conflict.

* The United Arab Emirates joined others in urging restraint, calling for dialogue to avoid further regional instability.

* Russia, in contrast, had a more direct stance, supporting India’s right to retaliate while not explicitly calling for restraint.

The Pahalgam Terror Attack: The Catalyst for Operation Sindoor

The Pahalgam attack on April 22, 2025, remains one of the most devastating terror incidents in recent memory. Terrorists targeted a group of tourists in the Baisaran Valley, killing 26 people, including 25 Indians and one Nepali. The attack was claimed by The Resistance Front (TRF), a group linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), and was motivated by opposition to demographic changes in the region.

The attack sparked widespread outrage in India and led to the launch of Operation Sindoor. For India, the operation was not just about striking back but sending a clear message to Pakistan and the world about India’s commitment to counterterrorism.

Operation Sindoor stands as a landmark in India’s response to cross-border terrorism. Its broad scope, the strategic use of advanced weapons, and its emotional and symbolic significance make it unique compared to previous military actions. The naming of the operation itself — a tribute to the women who lost their husbands in Pahalgam — emphasizes the personal and national commitment to justice. The world continues to watch closely as the situation between India and Pakistan unfolds, with hopes for peace but an acknowledgment that India’s stance on terrorism has grown stronger and more assertive.
