On April 21, 2025, the world was plunged into mourning with the passing of Pope Francis at the age of 88. The announcement of his death came through Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Irish-American cardinal, who broke the news to the world with a solemn message.
“Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father,” Kevin Farrell said, delivering the somber news.
Kevin Farrell’s announcement is a crucial part of his responsibilities as the Camerlengo, the Vatican official who takes charge of the administration of the Vatican and prepares for the election of the next pope following the death or resignation of the sitting pope.
Cardinal Kevin Farrell’s Journey
Born in 1947 in Dublin, Ireland, Kevin Farrell was ordained as a priest in 1978. He initially worked in Mexico as the chaplain of the Regnum Christi Movement at the University of Monterrey, before moving to the United States in 1984. There, he joined the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C. and later became the auxiliary bishop for the archdiocese in 2002.
In 2007, Kevin Farrell was appointed as the bishop of the Diocese of Dallas, a position he held until 2016 when Pope Francis called him to Rome. Kevin Farrell was appointed as the prefect of the Vatican’s newly established Dicastery for the Laity, Family, and Life. His career took another step forward when Pope Francis appointed him as Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church in 2019.
Kevin Farrell has had his share of controversies, especially surrounding his work with Theodore McCarrick, a former cardinal defrocked due to sexual abuse allegations. However, Kevin Farrell has consistently denied any prior knowledge of McCarrick’s behavior.
The Role of Camerlengo
The role of the Camerlengo, especially following the death of the pope, is one of significant responsibility. Cardinal Kevin Farrell now assumes the role of overseeing the operations of the Vatican during the period of Sede Vacante (the period when the papacy is vacant), which includes managing the administration of the Vatican, securing the Vatican’s finances, and preparing for the election of a new pope.
One of his initial tasks was to ascertain Pope Francis’s death. As per tradition, the Camerlengo must confirm the pope’s death by calling out his baptismal name three times. Once this is done, the papal body is placed in a coffin, and the seal of the Pope is broken to prevent misuse. Kevin Farrell is also tasked with locking the papal apartments and preparing for the conclave — the assembly of cardinals that will elect the new pope.
Can Cardinal Kevin Farrell Be the Next Pope?
While Kevin Farrell has assumed a crucial role as the acting head of the Vatican, his potential to become the next pope is a subject of speculation. Canon law does not prohibit the Camerlengo from being elected pope, but historically, it has rarely happened. Only two Camerlengos have been elected pope in the past: Gioacchino Pecci, who became Pope Leo XIII in 1878, and Eugenio Pacelli, who became Pope Pius XII in 1939.
As Kevin Farrell is deeply involved in the conclave process, it seems unlikely he would be chosen to succeed Pope Francis. However, as a prominent figure in the Vatican, his name will undoubtedly be mentioned in discussions surrounding the election of the next pope.
Kevin Farrell’s Responsibility in the Interim Period
Cardinal Farrell, as the Camerlengo, also plays a pivotal role in the day-to-day administration of the Vatican during the interregnum. In addition to preparing for the conclave, he will oversee the financial operations of the Vatican and ensure that the church’s institutions continue to function smoothly. Kevin Farrell is also responsible for ensuring that the conclave takes place within a set period (15-20 days after the pope’s death) and that the cardinals involved in the election process adhere to strict confidentiality.
With the passing of Pope Francis, Cardinal Kevin Farrell now assumes a crucial role in managing the Vatican and preparing for the election of the next pope. While Kevin Farrell’s tenure as Camerlengo involves a range of administrative duties, including overseeing the conclave, his role in the papal succession will be closely observed. Whether he becomes the next pope remains uncertain, but his experience and position within the Vatican make him a significant figure in the coming days of transition for the Catholic Church.
