Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav’s tweet has been going viral on social media since yesterday. In his tweet, he writes, “As the land deals in Ayodhya are being exposed, the truth is coming out that people from outside Ayodhya have bought land on a large scale to make profits under the BJP rule. The BJP government’s failure to increase the circle rate for the past 7 years is an economic conspiracy against the local people. This has led to land scams worth billions of rupees. Here, not the devotees but the land mafias have bought lands.”
He also shared an article from the Indian Express with his tweet, where the Indian Express claimed in its investigation that massive land purchases have been made within a 15-kilometer radius of the temple since 2019, i.e., since the Supreme Court gave its verdict on the Ram Temple.
Akhilesh Yadav criticized the BJP government for not increasing the circle rate in Ayodhya for the past seven years, which is the rate at which a particular land purchase registration fee is paid. He called it a conspiracy by the BJP against local residents. He said that the land mafias have taken advantage of this condition by buying land from poor people and farmers and then selling it to outsiders at inflated rates.
Now, let’s discuss the Indian Express article that Akhilesh Yadav shared, accusing the government of promoting land mafias. In its investigation, the Indian Express studied over 2,500 land registries in 25 villages around the Ram Temple and found that land purchases within a 15-kilometer radius of the temple have increased by 30 percent since the historic Supreme Court judgment in 2019. Many high-profile individuals are involved in these land purchases.
According to the Indian Express, those involved in these land purchases include the two sons of Arunachal Pradesh Deputy CM Chowna Mein, who bought about 4 hectares of land for around ₹3.72 crores and sold a portion for ₹98 lakhs. The main objective was to develop tourism infrastructure, such as hotels and other facilities. BJP’s former MP Brij Bhushan Singh’s son, Karan Bhushan Singh, through his company, bought 0.97 hectares of land for ₹1.15 crores and later sold a portion for ₹60.96 lakhs. Additionally, UP Home Department Secretary Sanjeev Gupta, UP Education Department Joint Director Arvind Kumar Pandey, UP Police STF Chief Additional DGP Amitabh Yash, and many others are involved in these land purchases.
Not only that, but large companies such as Adani, House of Abhinandan Lodha, Galgotias, Vyakti Vikas Kendra, Galgotia Hotel and Resorts, The Innovators Digital Ads, and others have also purchased land ranging from 1 hectare to 18 hectares, with transactions worth ₹7 to ₹105 crores.
Now, let’s understand the problem. Akhilesh Yadav’s allegations and the conclusions of the Indian Express investigation suggest that it is very necessary to investigate the matter. Ayodhya is undergoing a transformation, so it is important to ensure that the development benefits local residents and adheres to fair practices. This example from Ayodhya highlights the need to balance development and people’s rights. As more details emerge, the demand for accountability and transparency in these land purchases will only intensify.
