In Los Angeles, a pro-Palestine encampment at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) became the site of violence when pro-Israel counter-protesters attacked demonstrators early Wednesday morning. The incident occurred following several days of escalating tensions and harassment.
The encampment, established to protest Israel’s actions in Gaza, faced disruption when counter-protesters equipped with metal pipes, mace, and pepper spray assaulted the protesters, according to encampment spokesperson Anna, who preferred to withhold her last name. The clash led to multiple injuries among the pro-Palestine protesters, some of whom required hospitalization.
UCLA officials canceled classes in response to the violence and issued a statement condemning the “horrific acts of violence” against the encampment. Despite the administration’s condemnation, allegations arose regarding the inadequate response from campus police and the late intervention by the Los Angeles Police Department and the California Highway Patrol.
The university’s Radio News Department criticized the campus security and University of California Police Department (UCPD) for their passive stance during the attack, claiming no substantial efforts were made to protect the students.
The violence contrasts with the generally peaceful nature of the demonstration, which had strict guidelines for conduct, including avoiding interactions with police and journalists and not engaging with counter-protesters.
This incident at UCLA is part of a broader pattern of rising tensions and civil disobedience on U.S. college campuses regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Activists continue to demand that universities divest from companies supporting Israel’s military actions and cut ties with Israeli academic institutions.
Following the attack, political figures like Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and California Governor Gavin Newsom have spoken out, calling for investigations and accountability for those responsible for the violence. However, the response has been mixed, with some politicians focusing on allegations of anti-Semitism linked to anti-Zionist activism on campuses.
The situation remains tense, with a strong police presence still on the campus and further political and administrative actions expected as the university and wider community react to the unfolding events.
