In a diplomatic gesture reflecting respect for democratic processes, the United States refrained from commenting on the outcomes of India’s recent Lok Sabha elections. On Tuesday, the US State Department’s spokesperson, Matthew Miller, lauded the elections as an extraordinary display of democracy, underscoring the magnitude of participation by Indian citizens.
Matthew Miller emphasized the US government’s longstanding policy of refraining from making pronouncements on electoral outcomes globally. He reiterated this stance during a press briefing while addressing inquiries concerning the ongoing Lok Sabha election results, which were still pending at the time.
Asserting the importance of awaiting the finalization of election results before issuing definitive statements, Matthew Miller declined to engage in discussions on electoral winners or losers. Instead, he commended both the Indian government and its electorate for orchestrating and participating in what he described as the “largest exercise of democracy in history.”
Addressing speculations regarding external influence in India’s electoral process, particularly from Western nations including the US, Matthew Miller categorically denied any such interference. He reaffirmed the US government’s commitment to expressing concerns transparently and openly, whether through private channels with foreign governments or public statements.
Matthew Miller expressed optimism about the enduring partnership between the United States and India, highlighting the robust ties at both governmental and grassroots levels. He affirmed his expectation for the continuation of this partnership in the future.
Despite indications of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s anticipated return for a third term, albeit with his BJP-led NDA coalition falling short of projected results, Matthew Miller abstained from commenting on specific political outcomes. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 240 out of the 543 Lok Sabha seats, with the Indian National Congress (INC) clinching 99 seats.
The United States’ neutral stance on the Indian Lok Sabha election results underscores its commitment to respecting the democratic processes of sovereign nations while maintaining bilateral partnerships.
