US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell expressed support for India’s efforts to improve strained relations with China during a discussion at a Washington think tank on Wednesday. Kurt Campbell’s remarks followed External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s statement that India would prioritize resolving border issues with China as it entered a second consecutive term.
Kurt Campbell emphasized the importance of finding common ground between India and China to reduce tensions. He acknowledged the complexities involved, noting Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s historical reluctance to compromise on territorial disputes.
While expressing confidence in the US-India bilateral relationship, Kurt Campbell highlighted upcoming engagements in India with US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan to strengthen coordination between the two nations.
However, Kurt Campbell underscored the structural challenges in Sino-Indian relations, particularly regarding territorial issues along their 3,800 km border. The region has been a point of contention since a war in 1962, with recent military confrontations escalating tensions.
Kurt Campbell’s comments reflect ongoing US efforts to bolster ties with India amid geopolitical shifts and regional security concerns. The US remains committed to supporting India’s diplomatic initiatives while navigating differences, including those related to human rights and regional stability.
