Following Iran’s recent attack on Israel involving over 300 drones and missiles, the United States has communicated to Israel that it will not join any retaliatory strikes against Iran. The attack, purportedly in response to an earlier strike on Iran’s consulate in Syria, was largely intercepted by Israeli, US, and allied forces before reaching their targets.
President Joe Biden reportedly urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to consider the response carefully, emphasizing strategic considerations. A senior administration official stated that Israel “got the best of it” in the exchange, highlighting the interception of approximately 99% of the launched weapons as a demonstration of Israeli military superiority over Iran.
US Central Command (Centcom) disclosed that US aircraft and naval vessels shot down dozens of Iranian projectiles during the attack, including over 80 drones and at least six ballistic missiles. Additionally, seven drones and a ballistic missile were intercepted as they prepared to launch from Yemen.
During a conversation between Biden and Netanyahu, held amidst heightened tensions just after the attack, both leaders discussed strategies to de-escalate the situation. While the White House did not explicitly warn against a significant Israeli response, it emphasized Israel’s prerogative to make such decisions.
National security spokesman John Kirby reiterated on US networks that the US seeks to avoid further escalation of the conflict and has communicated this stance to Israel and Iran through diplomatic channels. Despite criticism from some US lawmakers and former officials, including calls for US participation in any potential Israeli retaliatory attack on Iran’s nuclear program, the administration remains firm on its decision not to join such actions.
In response to the recent events, Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson announced renewed efforts to pass military aid for Israel, which has previously stalled amid debates over including assistance for Taiwan and Ukraine. Former Deputy Secretary of Defense for the Middle East, Mick Mulroy, emphasized the importance of timely aid for Israel, stating that it is integral to US national security interests.
