Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a defiant statement on Thursday, asserting the strength of the country’s military in response to perceived US pressure.
Benjamin Netanyahu’s remarks followed US President Joe Biden’s warning of potential arms supply curbs if Israel continued its offensive in the southern Gaza city of Rafah. Israel proceeded with its offensive in Rafah on May 6, despite international objections.
In a video statement, Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel was prepared to “fight with our fingernails” if necessary, signaling resolve in the face of potential sanctions from the US.
The White House sought to downplay President Joe Biden’s warning, emphasizing that its position did not signify abandonment of Israel. However, concerns were raised about the potential impact of a major ground operation in Rafah on peace negotiations.
Negotiators left Cairo without a breakthrough in ceasefire talks mediated by Egypt and Qatar amid Israel’s offensive in Rafah. The conflict in Gaza, which began on October 7 the previous year, has resulted in significant casualties and displacement.
Meanwhile, Israeli military spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari affirmed that the IDF had adequate munitions for the Rafah operation and other planned activities.
Efforts to broker a ceasefire and secure the release of hostages have faced challenges amidst ongoing violence, underscoring the urgency of resolving the conflict in Gaza.
