In the wake of escalating trade tensions stirred by US President Donald Trump’s imposition of sweeping tariffs, India has confirmed that it is engaged in ongoing trade talks with the United States. Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has emphasized that while India is committed to constructive negotiations, it will not be coerced into hasty agreements. Goyal’s statements come in response to President Trump’s recent move to pause reciprocal tariffs for all countries except China, which now faces a hefty 145% tariff. Goyal firmly stated that India does not negotiate “at gunpoint,” reinforcing the nation’s position that its national interest will remain the core of any deal.

India’s Strategic Approach to Trade Talks

While the global trade environment has become increasingly strained due to Trump’s tariff policies, India has been granted a temporary 90-day reprieve from these tariffs. This extension gives both nations valuable time to continue trade discussions without the pressure of immediate financial consequences. Initially, India was expected to be among the countries affected by Trump’s aggressive tariff stance. However, the 90-day window allows India and the US to engage in more focused and strategic dialogues.

Piyush Goyal expressed confidence that these talks are moving forward in a positive and respectful manner. The Indian government remains committed to securing an agreement that will drive growth, innovation, and fairness for both sides. He also highlighted that while negotiations must have deadlines to ensure productivity, decisions should not be rushed if they risk undermining India’s long-term economic interests.

Bilateral Trade Expansion Plans

Looking ahead, both India and the United States have set ambitious goals for their trade relationship. The two countries are aiming to conclude the first phase of their trade agreement by the fall of 2025. This phase will lay the groundwork for the long-term goal of more than doubling bilateral trade, increasing it from USD 191 billion to USD 500 billion by 2030. The expanded trade agreement is expected to bring mutual benefits in various sectors, including technology, manufacturing, and agriculture.

India’s negotiation stance reflects its strong desire to protect its national interests while fostering fair and mutually beneficial trade agreements with its key global partners. Despite the global uncertainty surrounding tariff wars, India’s commitment to a balanced, strategic approach remains a defining factor in its foreign trade policy.
