In Nashville, a DoorDash driver has been swiftly terminated from his job after being captured on doorbell footage hurling racist slurs at a Black customer. The incident, which was recorded and posted by the customer Christina Derrica on TikTok, has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation.
The delivery driver is seen dropping off Ms. Derrica’s order on her front porch. Shockingly, as he completes the delivery, he says, “Here’s your food, n***r.” As he walks away, he adds another racial slur, saying, “Chow down, n***r.”
Ms. Derrica’s TikTok post quickly went viral, amassing over 3 million views. In response to the incident, she called on DoorDash to take immediate action against the driver, which they promptly did. According to a report by the New York Post, DoorDash fired the driver following the public outcry.
Ms. Derrica also shared a screenshot of the email she received from DoorDash, confirming the termination of the driver. A DoorDash customer service representative offered assistance if Ms. Derrica wished to report the incident to the police, although it remains unclear whether she has pursued legal action.
In a statement to The Post, DoorDash spokesperson Julian Crowley expressed profound dismay over the incident, emphasizing their firm stance against racism. “We’re horrified and appalled by this. Make no mistake – we have absolutely zero tolerance for racism,” Crowley stated. “This horrific incident violates both our policies and what we believe in. We have deactivated this Dasher account and reached out to the customer to offer our support.”
Social media users reacted with shock and disbelief at the driver’s behavior, with many expressing concern for Ms. Derrica’s safety. Comments ranged from astonishment at the driver’s audacity to worries about potential retaliation.
“The way I gasped,” one user wrote in response to the video. Another commented, “Some people have way too much hate in their hearts. Oh my god.”
Several users also expressed fears for Ms. Derrica’s safety, highlighting the unsettling nature of the incident. “I wouldn’t feel safe eating the food,” one commenter remarked. “Please just be careful in case he comes back,” another urged Ms. Derrica.
The incident underscores ongoing issues of racism and discrimination faced by Black individuals in everyday interactions, even in service encounters. DoorDash’s swift action in terminating the driver reflects a commitment to addressing such incidents seriously and swiftly.
