In an exclusive interview with AFP, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called upon China and nations from the Global South to join a forthcoming peace summit in Switzerland. The Swiss government has announced plans to host a high-level conference for Ukraine in mid-June, though Russia has declined attendance.
Zelensky’s appeal for China’s involvement follows his assertion that Chinese leaders believe a Russian defeat in the conflict would constitute a victory for the United States and the West. He emphasized the need for a balance in international efforts towards peace, advocating for China’s participation in the summit.
The Ukrainian president’s remarks come amidst Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recent visit to China, during which both leaders portrayed their nations as stabilizing forces in a tumultuous global landscape.
While China maintains its stance as a neutral party in the Ukraine conflict and seeks a mediator role, it has faced criticism for its reluctance to condemn Moscow’s actions.
Zelensky extended a broader invitation to nations worldwide to send delegations to Switzerland, emphasizing that absence would signify support for Russia’s agenda. He highlighted three key issues for potential consensus: ensuring free navigation in the Black Sea to facilitate global food security, halting strikes on energy infrastructure, and securing the return of Ukrainian children deported to Russia.
The Ukrainian president expressed optimism that progress on these fronts, with the agreement of the majority of participating countries, could impede further Russian obstruction.
The upcoming summit presents an opportunity for international stakeholders to engage in crucial discussions aimed at resolving the Ukraine conflict and advancing peace efforts in the region.
