In the midst of escalating violence and catastrophic suffering in the Gaza Strip and occupied West Bank, the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process has issued a fervent plea for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire and the release of all hostages. Special Coordinator Tor Wennesland’s urgent call comes as intense hostilities persist between Israeli forces and Hamas fighters, with reports of numerous casualties, including children.
This call for a ceasefire follows Monday’s adoption by the Security Council of a resolution demanding an immediate cessation of hostilities in Gaza for the remainder of Ramadan, along with the unconditional release of all hostages. Despite this resolution, the situation on the ground remains dire, with violence continuing unabated.
Speaking to ambassadors at the Council briefing, Wennesland reiterated the UN’s condemnation of the brutal attacks by Hamas and other groups on communities in southern Israel. He stressed that nothing can justify such acts of terror, emphasizing the urgent need to end the cycle of violence and suffering.
Wennesland expressed deep concern over the immense scale of death, destruction, and suffering caused by Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, noting that civilian casualties are occurring at an unprecedented rate. He underscored the urgency of addressing the life-threatening conditions faced by the more than 1.7 million internally displaced persons in Gaza, particularly in light of Israel’s planned ground operation in Rafah, which could lead to further displacement.
Amidst the looming threat of famine and horrifying levels of suffering across Gaza, Wennesland called on Israel to fulfill its obligations under international law and facilitate rapid and unimpeded humanitarian access to the region. While a maritime corridor has been opened for additional aid delivery, Wennesland emphasized that land delivery remains essential for reaching those in need on a large scale.
Furthermore, Wennesland stressed the importance of protecting humanitarian workers and aid convoys, highlighting the dangers they face and the need for increased security measures to ensure their safety.
