Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Dr. Sudipto Roy has been removed from the ex-students’ association of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital following his public praise of the hospital’s former principal, Dr. Sandip Ghosh. Roy, who has been entangled in several controversies, including corruption charges, is also under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with financial irregularities and a high-profile case related to RG Kar Hospital.
The controversy surrounding Dr. Sudipto Roy escalated after he praised Dr. Ghosh during an interview with India Today magazine, where he referred to the former principal as “an able administrator and a good teacher.” This statement sparked discontent within the RG Kar ex-students’ association, especially given that Dr. Ghosh has also been implicated in ongoing investigations regarding corruption at the hospital.
Dr. Sudipto Roy, a member of the State Health Recruitment Board and a former president of the West Bengal Medical Council, currently serves as the MLA for Sreerampore in Hooghly district. He has faced scrutiny from the CBI, which has been investigating his alleged involvement in the RG Kar Hospital rape and murder case. In addition, Akhtar Ali, the former Deputy Superintendent of RG Kar Medical College, filed a complaint against Sudipto Roy in 2023, accusing him of threatening behavior and siphoning off hospital consumables for his private clinic. The complaint also alleged that Sudipto Roy solicited services from hospital vendors for personal gain.
In a statement, the ex-students’ association clarified their decision to remove Dr. Sudipto Roy, citing various financial and administrative irregularities during his tenure as Chairperson of the Patient Welfare Association at RG Kar Hospital. These irregularities included complaints regarding the allotment of stalls, cafeteria space, and parking areas within the hospital. According to the association, these issues are still under investigation, and Sudipto Roy’s involvement cannot be ignored. “All the members, office bearers, and everyone associated have lost faith in him,” the association declared.
On August 31, 2024, the association held its annual general body meeting, where it was unanimously decided to remove Dr. Sudipto Roy from the organization under clause 6C of the association’s constitution. His membership was officially terminated, and he will no longer be recognized as a member of the ex-students’ association.
In addition to the CBI raids on his residence and private nursing home, Dr. Sudipto Roy is also being investigated by the ED for corruption allegations. The investigation revealed that Dr. Ghosh contacted Sudipto Roy hours after the body of a trainee doctor was found in the hospital’s seminar hall, further complicating Sudipto Roy’s legal troubles.
