West Bengal’s ruling party, Trinamool Congress, launched statewide protests on Saturday, demanding the death penalty for the accused in the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
Trinamool Congress Calls for Stricter Punishments
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s party is advocating for capital punishment and a revision of existing laws to ensure harsher penalties for such heinous crimes. The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has also intensified its protests against the Trinamool Congress government, contributing to the ongoing political tensions between the central government and the state. These protests come 20 days after the tragic murder of a second-year postgraduate medical student within the seminar hall of a state-run hospital.
Statewide Protests and Demands for Justice
The Trinamool Congress has initiated a two-day protest, calling for the death penalty in the Kolkata rape-murder case and advocating for stricter laws to combat crimes against women. Mamata Banerjee has urged Trinamool Congress workers to hold protests across all blocks in the state, with a special focus on mobilizing women for demonstrations scheduled on Sunday.
Simultaneously, the Bharatiya Janata Party, which had announced a seven-day protest against the state government, is expected to conduct multiple demonstrations across West Bengal. The Bharatiya Janata Party has accused Mamata Banerjee of adopting a dictatorial stance towards protesting students and evading accountability for the rape-murder incident.
Broader Calls for Protection and Legal Reforms
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has also joined the movement, organizing a protest at New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Saturday. Dr. Suvrankar Datta, an Indian Medical Association official, stated that the protest aims to seek justice for their colleague at RG Kar Medical College and to urge the Central Government to establish a centralized protection act for healthcare professionals to prevent violence against them.
In response to the incident, the central government has called on Mamata Banerjee to expedite the establishment of fast-track special courts dedicated to handling cases of rape and those under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act in the state. Union Minister for Women and Child Development, Annapurna Devi, urged the Chief Minister to ensure swift and efficient justice for victims of such crimes.
Mamata Banerjee, in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, reiterated her demand for stringent central legislation to address violence and crimes against women. The central government responded by emphasizing the need for the state to implement existing laws effectively.
Human Rights and Investigation Developments
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Friday issued a notice to the Kolkata Police Commissioner regarding the alleged use of excessive force on protesters demanding justice for the victim in the RG Kar Medical College case. The National Human Rights Commission has requested an action-taken report from the Police Commissioner within two weeks, following the police action on August 27.
The Kolkata Police, in response to a video showing people gathered inside the seminar hall where the trainee doctor was killed, stated that the crime scene was properly cordoned off and preserved. They released photographs of the crime scene to affirm that it was not compromised.
Meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team investigating the rape murder is examining a 40-minute delay between the discovery of the deceased’s body and the notification of the police. Sources indicate that the Central Bureau of Investigation is exploring whether there was an attempt by hospital authorities to cover up the crime.
Political Repercussions and Ongoing Protests
The office of the West Bengal Governor has expressed a commitment to expedite the handling of requests made by the parents of the victim. This follows a meeting between West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose and Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi, where the Governor briefed him on the severity of the situation and the ongoing protests in the state.
West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party President Sukanta Majumdar has criticized Mamata Banerjee’s recent statements, alleging that her rhetoric has the potential to incite unrest in various states. Sukanta Majumdar, who is also a Union Minister, urged central agencies to monitor Mamata Banerjee’s interactions and meetings closely, following her remark that unrest in Bengal could have repercussions in other parts of India.
The protests and political fallout from the Kolkata rape-murder case continue to escalate, with both the Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party intensifying their efforts to address the situation and hold those responsible accountable.
