  • Train fares increased for long-distance travel from December 26
  • Suburban services and season tickets remain unchanged

Long-distance train travel in India has become more expensive from December 26, as the Ministry of Railways implemented a revised fare structure aimed at balancing passenger affordability with the financial sustainability of railway operations.

The fare revision, announced by the Ministry of Railways, marks the second increase in train ticket prices within six months and applies only to tickets booked on or after December 26. Passengers who booked tickets before this date will not be required to pay any additional amount, even if their journey takes place after the new fares come into effect. According to officials, the changes are part of a calibrated approach to ensure that the rail network remains viable while continuing to serve millions of passengers daily.

Revised fare structure brings modest increases across travel classes

Under the updated fare regime, suburban services and season tickets, both suburban and non-suburban, remain untouched. This decision reflects the railways’ intent to protect daily commuters and frequent travellers who rely on affordable rail transport for work and education. The increases have been selectively applied to long-distance travel, where operational costs are higher and revenue pressures more pronounced.

For second class ordinary travel, the increase varies by distance. Journeys of up to 215 kilometres will see no change in fares, offering relief to short-distance passengers. For distances between 216 and 750 kilometres, fares have been increased by five rupees. Passengers travelling between 751 and 1,250 kilometres will pay ten rupees more, while those covering 1,251 to 1,750 kilometres will see a rise of fifteen rupees. For the longest journeys, between 1,751 and 2,250 kilometres, the increase is capped at twenty rupees. Officials have described these hikes as incremental and designed to minimise the burden on passengers.

Sleeper class ordinary and first class ordinary tickets have also been revised, with an increase of one paisa per kilometre. While the per-kilometre hike may appear small, it translates into a noticeable difference over long distances. Mail and express trains, which form the backbone of long-distance rail travel, have seen an increase of two paise per kilometre across both non-air-conditioned and air-conditioned classes. This applies uniformly to sleeper class, first class, AC chair car, AC three-tier, AC two-tier, and AC first class.

For example, on a 500-kilometre journey in a non-air-conditioned mail or express coach, passengers can expect to pay approximately ten rupees more than before. The railways have emphasised that the revised fares are still among the most affordable modes of long-distance transport in the country, especially when compared with road and air travel.

Impact on premium and special train services across the network

The revised fares will also apply to a wide range of premium and special train services operated by Indian Railways. These include high-profile services such as Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, Vande Bharat, Tejas, Gatimaan, Humsafar, Amrit Bharat, Antyodaya, Garib Rath, Jan Shatabdi, Yuva Express, Mahamana, and Namo Bharat Rapid Rail, among others. Despite their premium positioning, these services will follow the same per-kilometre fare revision structure as mail and express trains.

Railway officials have clarified that there are no changes in reservation fees, superfast surcharges, or other ancillary charges, all of which will continue to be levied as per existing rules. Goods and services tax applicability also remains unchanged, and fares will continue to be rounded off according to prevailing norms. This continuity, officials say, ensures transparency and avoids confusion among passengers.

The ministry has framed the fare revision as part of a broader effort to maintain and improve service quality. Rising input costs, including fuel, maintenance, safety upgrades, and infrastructure expansion, have placed increasing pressure on railway finances. At the same time, the railways continue to operate a vast network that caters to diverse socio-economic groups, making affordability a critical consideration in any pricing decision.

Officials have stressed that the revised fare structure represents a balanced approach that safeguards passenger convenience while supporting the long-term sustainability of railway operations. By keeping increases modest and targeted, the railways aim to generate additional revenue without significantly impacting travel demand. The ministry has also highlighted ongoing investments in station redevelopment, modern trains, safety systems, and digital services as evidence of its commitment to enhancing the passenger experience.

The fare hike has prompted mixed reactions from travellers, with some expressing concern over rising travel costs and others acknowledging the need for periodic revisions to maintain service standards. As the railways continue to modernise and expand, fare rationalisation is likely to remain a recurring topic in public discourse, reflecting the challenge of running one of the world’s largest rail networks in a financially sustainable yet socially inclusive manner.
