In a heartbreaking incident in the heart of Delhi’s historic Nizamuddin area, six people lost their lives on Friday after the roof of a room collapsed at Dargah Sharif Patte Shah, a site situated near the world-renowned Humayun’s Tomb. The accident occurred in a peripheral structure within the 16th-century complex, sparking widespread rescue efforts and drawing attention to the vulnerability of old and newly built constructions in heritage-rich zones. Authorities clarified that the main dome and core structure of Humayun’s Tomb, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of India’s most iconic monuments, remained untouched by the collapse. However, the tragic loss of life has left the community grieving and has raised pressing questions about safety measures in and around heritage precincts.

The Dargah Sharif Patte Shah forms part of a larger historic and religious ensemble that surrounds Humayun’s Tomb, encompassing Mughal-era architecture, landscaped gardens, and smaller shrines frequented by devotees and visitors. According to Delhi Police, the first distress call about the collapse was received at approximately 3:55 PM. Within minutes, emergency services were mobilised, and local police, fire personnel, and medical teams reached the site. Rescue workers pulled between 10 to 12 individuals from the debris, rushing the injured to AIIMS Trauma Centre and LNJP Hospital for urgent treatment. Despite the best efforts of medical personnel, six lives were confirmed lost by evening.

The scene in the aftermath of the collapse was one of chaos and urgency, with the combined presence of Delhi Police, Delhi Fire Service (DFS), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) working in coordination. A senior police officer reported that the Station House Officer (SHO) and local police were the first to arrive, reaching the location within five minutes of the call. They were soon joined by fire tenders, ambulances, and later, NDRF teams equipped for search-and-rescue operations in challenging conditions. Their coordinated work ensured that at least 11 people were successfully rescued from the rubble.

Initial assessments suggest that the collapse could have been triggered by structural weakening, possibly aggravated by the heavy rains that have lashed Delhi in recent weeks. Although the precise cause has yet to be officially confirmed, the damage to the peripheral structure highlights the potential dangers that prolonged exposure to moisture and inadequate maintenance can pose to heritage-linked properties. Such incidents underscore the importance of regular structural audits for both old and newly erected buildings, especially in areas that draw large numbers of visitors daily.

Ratish Nanda, conservation architect with the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC), which has been a long-term partner of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) in the conservation and restoration of Humayun’s Tomb, offered critical clarification regarding the extent of the damage. He confirmed, “There has been no damage to Humayun’s Tomb. A new structure was being built near the Humayun’s Tomb, and a portion of it has collapsed. Some of the debris also fell onto the outer walls of the Humayun’s Tomb.” His remarks not only dispelled fears about the UNESCO monument’s safety but also drew attention to ongoing construction activities in its vicinity.

The collapse site, situated close to the outer precincts of the Humayun’s Tomb complex, is frequented by pilgrims visiting the Dargah and tourists drawn to the monument’s rich history and architecture. In the immediate aftermath of the incident, the Delhi Traffic Police swiftly implemented diversions and cleared key routes leading to hospitals, ensuring ambulances could transport the injured without delays caused by the capital’s notorious traffic congestion. This rapid response by traffic authorities played a critical role in providing timely medical intervention to survivors.

Heritage Zone in Shock as Rescue Operations Continue

The Nizamuddin area, home to a dense concentration of historical sites, spiritual centres, and residential quarters, was left shaken by the day’s events. For many locals, the Dargah Sharif Patte Shah is more than just a structure—it is a place woven into the spiritual and cultural fabric of the neighbourhood. The incident has stirred concern not only for the safety of heritage-adjacent constructions but also for the lives of people who work, pray, and reside in these areas.

Rescue operations extended into the evening, with floodlights brought in to aid visibility as workers sifted through the debris to ensure no one remained trapped. Teams from the NDRF, trained to deal with disasters in challenging urban environments, methodically removed chunks of concrete, wooden beams, and other rubble while being mindful of the delicate surroundings of a protected heritage site. The proximity to Humayun’s Tomb, with its centuries-old structures and gardens, added a layer of complexity to the operation, requiring careful handling to avoid collateral damage.

Survivors recounted harrowing moments of being trapped beneath the collapsed roof, unable to move or call for help until rescue teams arrived. For many, the incident was a reminder of the unpredictability of life and the fragility of even seemingly stable buildings. Authorities, while refraining from speculation, assured that an in-depth investigation would be carried out to determine the exact cause and to assess whether there were lapses in construction standards or safety protocols.

Safety, Accountability, and the Preservation of Delhi’s Historic Spaces

Delhi, a city where the ancient and modern coexist in close quarters, faces a recurring challenge: maintaining the structural integrity of its countless heritage-linked buildings while balancing the needs of contemporary use. The Dargah Sharif Patte Shah, though not part of the original Humayun’s Tomb design, shares its space within a historically sensitive zone, making both preservation and public safety a shared responsibility between government bodies, private stakeholders, and local communities.

In the wake of this tragedy, questions about the oversight of construction activities near UNESCO World Heritage Sites have gained renewed urgency. Even as Ratish Nanda’s clarification reassures the public about the main tomb’s safety, the fact remains that the collapse occurred within a zone where architectural interventions are subject to strict guidelines. If early indications about structural weakening are confirmed, it could point to either insufficient adherence to building codes or a failure to anticipate the risks posed by seasonal weather conditions.

Heritage conservationists have long argued for a more proactive approach to safeguarding not just monumental architecture but also the network of smaller structures, peripheral buildings, and community spaces that form an integral part of heritage complexes. Such spaces, often in active use by residents or worshippers, are vulnerable to wear and tear from both time and environmental exposure. Without regular inspection, maintenance, and reinforcement, they risk becoming safety hazards.

At the same time, the human toll of the collapse cannot be ignored. Families of the victims have been plunged into grief, their loss amplified by the suddenness of the disaster. Community leaders in Nizamuddin have called for both immediate assistance to the affected families and long-term measures to prevent similar tragedies. Government relief teams, in coordination with local NGOs, have begun offering support to survivors and the bereaved, though the process of emotional recovery will be far longer than the physical reconstruction of the collapsed site.

The incident has also sparked wider conversations about urban resilience in Delhi, especially in heritage-rich neighbourhoods. Experts note that while conservation projects like those undertaken at Humayun’s Tomb have successfully restored the grandeur of major monuments, the safety of adjoining areas must also be prioritised. The integration of structural safety audits, weatherproofing measures, and community awareness programs could serve as vital steps toward preventing future accidents.

In the coming days, authorities are expected to announce a detailed inquiry into the collapse, involving engineers, heritage conservationists, and safety regulators. Their findings will be crucial not only for assigning accountability but also for shaping policies that safeguard the coexistence of living communities and historic monuments. The Dargah Sharif Patte Shah tragedy is a sobering reminder that in a city layered with centuries of history, the past and present are bound together—not just in beauty and culture, but in the shared responsibility to protect lives.
