  • 18 Kanwariyas dead in tragic bus-truck collision in Jharkhand

In a heartbreaking turn of events, 18 Kanwariyas lost their lives and several others sustained serious injuries after a bus carrying them collided with a truck loaded with LPG cylinders in Jharkhand’s Deoghar district during the auspicious month of Shravan. The accident, which occurred in the early hours of the morning near the Jamuniya forest, has sent shockwaves across the region, especially among the devotees participating in the Kanwar Yatra.

The Kanwariyas, devotees of Lord Shiva, were reportedly en route to the Basukinath temple, a significant pilgrimage site in the area. As per local officials, the mishap took place around 4:30 am near the Jamuniya forest, under the jurisdiction of Mohanpur Police Station in Deoghar. The collision between the private bus and the gas-laden truck led to a massive impact, killing 18 pilgrims on the spot or shortly after due to severe injuries. The exact number of those injured is still being ascertained, but several are said to be in critical condition.

Early Morning Devotion Turns Fatal

The accident unfolded during a time when the Kanwar Yatra sees lakhs of devotees walking or travelling across states to offer holy water to Lord Shiva during the month of Shravan. The bus involved in the accident was carrying at least 32 passengers, most of whom were Kanwariyas from the nearby regions. It is suspected that both vehicles were travelling at considerable speed in the low-visibility pre-dawn hours when the crash occurred.

BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, who represents Godda in the Lok Sabha and whose constituency includes the Deoghar region, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. Taking to social media, he confirmed the death of 18 pilgrims and extended condolences to the bereaved families. “May Baba Baidyanath give strength to their families to bear this grief,” he wrote in a heartfelt post.

According to eyewitness accounts and preliminary investigations, the bus collided head-on with the truck, which was transporting LPG cylinders. The impact was so powerful that parts of the bus were mangled, making rescue operations challenging. The presence of gas cylinders also raised concerns of a potential explosion, prompting authorities to act swiftly to secure the area and prevent further casualties.

Rescue Efforts and Medical Response

Soon after the collision, police teams from Mohanpur Police Station and emergency medical personnel rushed to the site to carry out rescue and relief operations. Many of the injured were immediately transported to nearby hospitals, including the Sadar Hospital in Deoghar, for urgent medical attention. Some victims in critical condition were referred to higher medical centers for advanced care.

Inspector General of the Dumka Zone, Shailendra Kumar Sinha, initially reported five confirmed fatalities. However, as rescue operations progressed and more victims succumbed to injuries, the death toll rose significantly. Sinha noted that the condition of several injured was “serious” and that the number of fatalities might increase.

Deoghar sub-divisional officer Ravi Kumar later confirmed that the bus was ferrying Kanwariyas to the Basukinath temple, reiterating the religious significance of the journey. The district administration is now working to identify the deceased and injured, many of whom were carrying minimal documentation due to the nature of the pilgrimage.

The district authorities have been coordinating with hospitals, law enforcement, and volunteers to manage the aftermath. Local residents also played a crucial role, helping pull passengers from the wreckage and providing initial aid. The accident has cast a pall over the Kanwar Yatra, which otherwise is a time of celebration and spiritual fervor.

The exact cause of the accident is yet to be officially determined, though factors such as driver fatigue, high speed, and poor visibility during early morning hours are being considered. The presence of flammable gas cylinders added another layer of risk, and safety protocols around transporting such materials are likely to come under scrutiny.

The tragedy has prompted political reactions as well, with leaders across party lines expressing grief and calling for improved safety measures during major religious events. Given the massive participation in the Kanwar Yatra, questions are being raised about infrastructure readiness and emergency preparedness in regions that see a high influx of pilgrims.

As investigations continue, families of the victims are being contacted, and efforts are underway to extend compensation and support. The state government is expected to announce relief packages for the deceased and injured, though official statements on this front are still awaited.

This devastating incident serves as a grim reminder of the risks involved in mass religious travel and highlights the urgent need for stricter regulations, better infrastructure, and heightened vigilance—especially during events that draw thousands of participants over long distances.
