Ismail Haniyeh, a prominent leader of the Hamas organization, was killed early Wednesday morning in Tehran, according to a statement from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Hamas, the Palestinian militant group engaged in ongoing conflict with Israel, has accused Israel of orchestrating the attack. The group claims that Ismail Haniyeh and one of his bodyguards were killed in what it describes as a “treacherous Zionist raid” on his residence in the Iranian capital.
Ismail Haniyeh, who had been leading Hamas’s political operations from exile in Qatar, had attended the inauguration of Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian just a day before his death. During his visit, he also met with Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The assassination has been a major development amid the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict.
In response to the incident, Israel stated that its military is “fully prepared for any scenario.” Daniel Hagari, an Israeli military spokesperson, emphasized Israel’s preference to resolve hostilities without escalating into a broader war. The timing of Ismail Haniyeh’s killing is significant, coming amidst intense conflict between Israel and Hamas, with Ismail Haniyeh actively involved in ceasefire negotiations.
Earlier in April, Hamas had claimed that Israeli airstrikes had resulted in the deaths of three of Ismail Haniyeh’s sons and four of his grandchildren. The military wing of Hamas, led by Yahya Sinwar, is believed to have orchestrated the October 7 attack on Israel, which ignited the current war in Gaza.
The killing of Ismail Haniyeh comes just a day after the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced the death of Fuad Shukr, a senior commander of the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah. The IDF had accused Shukr of being behind a drone strike that killed twelve children in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
Ismail Haniyeh, aged 62, was born in a refugee camp near Gaza City. He joined Hamas in the late 1980s and quickly became a close associate of the group’s founder, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin. Ismail Haniyeh served multiple prison sentences in Israel during the 1980s and 1990s. Following Hamas’s victory in the 2006 Palestinian legislative elections, he briefly served as the Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority government before being dismissed by President Mahmoud Abbas in 2007. In 2017, Ismail Haniyeh was elected as the head of Hamas’s political wing and was subsequently designated a “specially designated global terrorist” by the United States.
The assassination of Ismail Haniyeh marks a dramatic and potentially escalating moment in the Israel-Gaza conflict, with significant implications for regional stability and ongoing diplomatic efforts.
