In a situation reflecting the delicate balance between tradition and administrative enforcement, a heated dispute erupted in Kanpur between a temple priest and a police officer over the use of loudspeakers during the Jagannath Rath Yatra, leading to the suspension of a police official and temporary delays in the revered procession.
Clash Over Loudspeaker Restrictions
Mahant Jitendra Das of Panki Hanuman Temple reportedly threatened to self-immolate after a confrontation with the police over restrictions on the number of loudspeakers allowed during the procession. According to Das and Krishna Das of the Jagannath Temple, police officials arrived before the Yatra began and instructed organisers to use only two speakers in the band accompanying the chariot. The organisers resisted, arguing that no prior instruction was issued by senior officials. During the discussions, the police allegedly misbehaved with the priest and others present, escalating tensions further.
The confrontation led to devotees staging a protest at Nayaganj, demanding action against the officers involved. The priest set an ultimatum for action by 8 PM, warning that he would resort to self-immolation if the demand for suspension was not met.
Police Action and Procession Resumes
Responding to the situation, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Satyajit Gupta confirmed that Station Officer Rajiv Kumar of Badshahi Naka Police Station was suspended for misconduct and abusive behaviour towards the priest. The DCP stated, “We have spoken to the Yatra coordinators and decided to suspend the SHO based on complaints, requesting the organisers to continue the Rath Yatra without further delay.”
The police appealed to the devotees and organisers to maintain peace and proceed with the Yatra, allowing additional sound systems to remain in place to avoid further delays. Extra police forces from neighbouring stations were deployed along the route to ensure law and order during the procession.
Following the suspension of the officer, the Jagannath Rath Yatra commenced around 8 PM, with the devotees continuing the tradition while the administration worked to restore calm in the area.
The incident highlighted the sensitivities involved in managing religious events while enforcing administrative rules, emphasising the need for clear communication and respect on all sides to avoid confrontations that can disrupt important community traditions.
