After a below-par performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP is preparing a major reset in Uttar Pradesh to regain momentum before the critical 2027 Assembly elections. The party is set to make significant organisational changes and a cabinet expansion in the Yogi Adityanath government, aiming to address voter drift and rebuild its social and regional connect.
Leadership Change on Priority
The first major move in this course correction will be the appointment of a new BJP state president in Uttar Pradesh. This announcement is expected soon, with the leadership viewing it as crucial not just for the upcoming state polls but also for the party’s broader transition plans nationally. The appointment will help the BJP signal a fresh approach in the state while aligning with its preparations to elect a new national president, a process that requires the completion of state unit elections.
Party insiders highlight that the focus has returned to internal restructuring after the pause following the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. Uttar Pradesh, a political stronghold for the BJP, is now the epicentre of these changes, with the central leadership keen on signalling seriousness about addressing shortcomings exposed in the 2024 Lok Sabha results.
Cabinet Expansion and Social Rebalancing
Alongside the leadership change, a cabinet expansion in the Yogi Adityanath government is on the cards. This move is intended to ensure a more balanced representation of regions and communities that either felt neglected or moved away from the BJP during the general elections. Sources indicate that areas like Awadh, Braj, Kashi, Ambedkar Nagar, and the Pratapgarh–Prayagraj belt could see increased attention.
Communities such as Pasi and Kurmi from Awadh; Saini, Maurya, and Shakya from the central-eastern region; Shakya from Braj; and Bind and Kurmi from the Kashi region are among those likely to receive greater representation in the government structure. These measures are being considered in response to internal reviews that revealed a decline of 6-7% in vote share in several key constituencies, even in regions previously considered strongholds.
The feedback shared with the BJP’s central leadership has prompted urgency for corrective steps, with the twin objectives of improving representation and regaining voter trust ahead of the 2027 polls. The party acknowledges that a significant section of its traditional voter base, including segments of OBC communities, drifted away in the last elections, impacting its performance against the opposition.
Preparing for a Crucial Battle
The BJP’s moves come at a time when the Samajwadi Party has strengthened its position through effective candidate selection and nuanced social engineering in the 2024 elections, boosting Akhilesh Yadav’s standing in state politics. The BJP is working on a counter-strategy to match and surpass the SP’s social outreach in the run-up to 2027.
For the BJP, retaining Uttar Pradesh is about more than winning a state election; it is tied to maintaining the party’s narrative of continuity at the national level under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third term. The Yogi Adityanath government, which came to power with a historic mandate in 2017 and strengthened it in 2022, will now seek a third consecutive term, with the upcoming reset seen as essential to keep its dominance intact in India’s most politically significant state.
By addressing gaps exposed in the 2024 elections through leadership changes and cabinet rebalancing, the BJP aims to re-energise its organisation, rebuild trust with communities that shifted allegiances, and prepare the state machinery for the high-stakes battle of 2027.
