As the internal divisions within the Opposition’s INDIA bloc have come to light, first in the Parliament Winter Session and now in the context of the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav clarified on Wednesday that the grand alliance of opposition parties was formed exclusively for the purpose of the Lok Sabha elections.
Tejashwi’s remarks came as the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress announced they would contest the Delhi elections separately, marking a visible rift within the INDIA alliance. Speaking to reporters, Tejashwi said, “It was already decided from before that the INDIA alliance was for Lok Sabha polls only.” This statement came in response to questions about his stance on the ongoing tensions between the Congress and AAP. The shift in alignment had become more apparent after RJD chief Lalu Yadav extended his support to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who had shown interest in leading the opposition alliance, instead of Congress leadership.
The situation in Delhi has further highlighted these fractures within the opposition. While AAP and Congress initially discussed the possibility of an alliance for the Delhi elections, talks have since broken down, and both parties are now headed towards a solo fight. The upcoming Delhi Assembly elections, scheduled for February 5, 2025, are expected to see a three-way contest among AAP, BJP, and Congress.
The political situation has further escalated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) reacting sharply to the internal turmoil within the opposition. BJP spokesperson Arvind Singh, while commenting on the rift, termed the opposition leaders as “international scamsters” and accused them of uniting solely to oppose Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “International scamsters, national scamsters, people decorated with many charges had come together in the elections against an honest man,” Singh said, adding fuel to the fire surrounding the ongoing political disputes.
The rift within the INDIA bloc is not a recent development but rather a culmination of tensions that have been brewing since the conclusion of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. BJP leader Narendra Modi had predicted during his election campaign that the alliance would “disintegrate” post-election results, and it now appears his prediction is coming to pass. Notably, during the Winter Session of Parliament, key parties like TMC (Trinamool Congress) and the Samajwadi Party refrained from participating in protests led by Congress against the central government, further demonstrating the lack of cohesion within the alliance. Mamata Banerjee’s TMC has positioned itself as a strong contender for leadership of the alliance, gaining support from several parties but excluding Congress from the leadership role.
The break in the alliance also became evident in the run-up to the Delhi elections. AAP, which had previously sought to form an alliance with Congress for the Delhi elections, decided to go it alone after negotiations fell through. This decision has left Congress isolated in Delhi, where it has long hoped to lead the INDIA bloc. In a show of solidarity, both Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party and Mamata Banerjee-led TMC have expressed their support for AAP in the upcoming polls, signaling a shift in allegiances that further marginalizes Congress.
With the Delhi Assembly elections set for February 5, 2025, and vote counting scheduled for February 8, the national capital is gearing up for a highly competitive race. This three-way contest will see AAP, led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, trying to retain its hold on the capital, while the BJP will look to defend its position as a strong political force in Delhi. Congress, on the other hand, will attempt to make a comeback, but its prospects are dimmed by the lack of a viable alliance and the increasing isolation within the opposition bloc.
As the political scenario evolves, the future of the INDIA alliance remains uncertain. The growing divisions among its constituent parties, particularly Congress, AAP, and TMC, suggest that the opposition alliance might face even more challenges in the run-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. With the Delhi polls as a key battleground, the results could offer valuable insights into the changing political dynamics and the prospects of a united opposition coalition in the coming months.
