Tensions escalated at Columbia University when New York City Police officers arrested dozens of pro-Palestine demonstrators who occupied Hamilton Hall. The arrests occurred following the university’s threat of expulsion aimed at ending the prolonged protest, marking a significant clash on the campus known for its history of student activism.
The operation commenced when police entered the building through a second-floor window. According to CNN, the building was cleared without any reported injuries, an hour after police intervention. This police action followed the deployment of hundreds of officers from the NYPD’s Strategic Response Group, responding to a directive from New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who insisted that the protest “must end now.”
The confrontation has been part of broader nationwide campus tensions, with over 1,000 protesters arrested in various states since April 18. At Columbia, the situation intensified on Tuesday when protesters, reportedly led by individuals not affiliated with the university, forcibly entered Hamilton Hall. They broke windows and renamed the building “Hind’s Hall” in symbolic protest, commemorating a young Palestinian child killed in Gaza.
A Columbia University spokesperson emphasized that the university would not risk community safety or allow further escalation. Following the administration’s warning of potential expulsion for students involved, the occupation saw logistical support with food and supplies being sent to the protesters via a makeshift pulley system from outside the building.
Outside the campus, Mayor Eric Adams addressed the media, attributing the takeover to “outside agitators” known for inciting unrest, further complicating the law enforcement response.
The White House has also weighed in on the issue, with National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby expressing President Joe Biden’s disapproval of the occupation tactics used at Columbia and other universities, labeling them as “the wrong approach” and not reflective of peaceful protest principles.
