A 17-year-old boy, who fatally knocked down two motorcycle-borne IT professionals with his Porsche car in Pune earlier this week, is reported to have spent Rs 48,000 at a city bar prior to the accident. Police have seized the bill as part of their investigation. Maharashtra Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar announced that the teen driver will be barred from obtaining a driving licence until he turns 25.
The minor will be presented before a juvenile court in Pune on Wednesday after a new case was filed against him under section 185 for driving under the influence of alcohol. Previously, a case of culpable homicide under section 304 was lodged against him, but he was granted bail within 14 hours due to his minor status.
State transport officials revealed that the permanent registration of the Porsche Taycan had been pending since March because the owner had not paid a fee of Rs 1,758. Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar stated that the vehicle, involved in the accident in Kalyani Nagar, would not be allowed to register at any Regional Transport Office (RTO) for 12 months as its existing temporary registration would be cancelled under the Motor Vehicles (MV) Act provisions.
“When it was presented at the Pune RTO, it was found that a certain registration fee was unpaid. The owner was instructed to pay the amount to complete the procedure,” Vivek Bhimanwar told PTI. The vehicle was initially sent to Pune on a temporary registration after being imported by a Bengaluru-based dealer but was not returned to the RTO to finalize the registration.
Transport officials noted that road tax is waived for electric vehicles in Maharashtra, with registration fees for the Porsche Taycan amounting to Rs 1,758, including hypothecation fees, smart card RC fees, and postal charges. The vehicle held a valid temporary registration certificate from Karnataka, valid for six months from March to September 2024. The Bengaluru dealer was deemed not at fault, having completed the temporary registration before handing over the car.
During the temporary registration period, vehicles are permitted to drive only to and from the RTO. Bhimanwar mentioned that the Pune RTO had been directed to file a police complaint for violations of the MV Act. A transport department official added that the Porsche would be impounded for 12 months due to gross negligence, as the teen was driving at over 160 kmph and allegedly intoxicated.
Vishal Agarwal, the teen’s father and a real estate developer, was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the accident and will appear in court today following medical tests. Additionally, a state government hospital is set to release the blood report of the teen driver, who allegedly consumed alcohol before the fatal crash.
