Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition in West Bengal and a prominent BJP figure, has written to Governor CV Ananda Bose urging for a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe into the clashes that erupted during a Ram Navami procession in Murshidabad. Adhikari attributes the violence to what he claims to be a “provocative speech” by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
In his letter, Adhikari directly accuses Mamata Banerjee of inciting the clashes in Murshidabad’s Rejinagar area with her purportedly inflammatory remarks. He alleges that Banerjee’s statements effectively emboldened miscreants, leading to disruptions and attacks on the Ram Navami processions across the state.
Adhikari took to social media platform X to express his concerns, stating, “The Ram Navami Processions were disrupted and attacked at various places across the State of West Bengal, due to the CM’s provocative speech which successfully incited miscreants, who were assured that the Law enforcement Agency won’t act against them as their hands have been tied due to CM’s public stance on Ram Navami; a day, which according to her, ‘Is a day for Rioting’.”
Furthermore, Adhikari has appealed to the Election Commission to initiate action against Mamata Banerjee for her alleged role in instigating the violence.
The clashes in Rejinagar left approximately 20 individuals injured as stones were reportedly hurled at the procession from rooftops. Consequently, authorities have imposed Section 144 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), prohibiting large gatherings in the region. Videos circulating on social media depict the intensity of the clashes, with police resorting to lathi charges and firing gas shells to disperse the crowd. The BJP has claimed that shops were vandalized during the unrest.
Those injured in the clashes have been admitted to Murshidabad Medical College, with law enforcement agencies subsequently deploying additional forces to restore and maintain order in the area.
