In a closely watched electoral battle, NCP (SP) candidate Supriya Sule secured a resounding victory on Tuesday, retaining her Baramati Lok Sabha seat by a margin exceeding 1.55 lakh votes, surpassing her opponent, Sunetra Pawar, in the electoral fray.
Ms Supriya Sule’s triumph over her sister-in-law, Sunetra Pawar, the wife of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and a newcomer to politics, underscored one of the most prominent contests in Maharashtra’s political landscape.
With a total of 7,32,312 votes polled in her favour, Supriya Sule emerged victorious against Sunetra Pawar, who secured 5,73,979 votes. The electoral face-off, characterized by familial ties and political ambition, held significant implications for both contenders.
Ajit Pawar’s significant influence within the family bastion of Baramati added intrigue to the electoral narrative, heightening anticipation surrounding Ms Supriya Sule’s bid for a fourth consecutive term.
The defeat of Sunetra Pawar, coupled with her husband’s prior political rift with Sharad Pawar, marks a significant setback for Ajit Pawar’s political fortunes. This loss echoes the earlier defeat of his son, Parth Pawar, in the 2019 general elections.
The electoral campaign in Baramati witnessed a fervent exchange of rhetoric and political manoeuvring among members of the Pawar family, with both factions leaving no stone unturned in their pursuit of victory.
Ms Supriya Sule’s commanding lead across various assembly segments, including Baramati, Indapur, Daund, Bhor, and Purandar, underscored the depth of her electoral support and reaffirmed her stronghold in the constituency.
In her post-victory remarks, Ms Supriya Sule expressed gratitude to the constituents of Baramati and emphasized the collective responsibility to uphold the dignity and ethos of Maharashtra’s political landscape.
Urging unity and reconciliation, Ms Supriya Sule advocated for a constructive and dignified approach in future electoral endeavours, emphasizing the need to uphold the esteemed traditions of Maharashtra’s political discourse.
Her sentiments were echoed by Sharad Pawar, who underscored the electorate’s discerning judgment and expressed confidence in the inherent wisdom of the voters in Baramati.
The resounding victory of Supriya Sule in Baramati stands as a testament to the enduring strength and resilience of the NCP (SP) and signals a new chapter in Maharashtra’s political narrative.
