Communal tensions flared in Surat, Gujarat, after an incident of stone-throwing at a Ganesh pandal led to the arrest of 27 individuals and the detention of six minors. The unrest began early Monday in the Sayedpura area when the pandal was targeted, prompting a significant law enforcement response.
Surat Police, upon notification of the disturbance, deployed a considerable force to the location to stabilize the situation. Measures included a lathi charge and the use of tear gas to disperse the agitated crowd, which had gathered in the thousands at a local police unit demanding justice.
Surat Police Commissioner Anupam Gehlot detailed the swift action taken by the police, stating, “Following the stone-pelting by some minors at the Ganesh pandal, a clash ensued. The police intervened promptly, removing the children involved and restoring order in the area.”
In the early hours, Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi and Kanti Balar, a local BJP MLA, visited the site. Their discussions with community members aimed at easing tensions and affirming the state’s commitment to maintaining peace.
Minister Sanghavi reported on the measures taken, including the scanning of CCTV footage to identify and apprehend additional culprits. He expressed his determination on social media, promising rigorous actions against those disrupting the peace: “As I promised, we have apprehended the culprits before sunrise. Our operations are ongoing with the aid of video and drone visuals, along with other surveillance technologies. We are committed to ensuring that all involved are held accountable.”
This incident has highlighted the challenges in managing communal harmony and underscored the prompt response capabilities of the local law enforcement.
