Sri Lanka has unveiled an ambitious plan to revitalize its tourism industry by offering free tourist visas to visitors from seven countries. Effective immediately, travelers from India, China, Russia, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia, and Thailand will receive complimentary tourist visas under a pilot project running until March 31, 2024.
The announcement came via a tweet from Sri Lanka’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ali Sabry, who emphasized that this initiative marks a significant departure from the nation’s previous visa policy.
Sri Lanka’s economy heavily relies on inbound tourism, with New Delhi being a significant contributor to tourist arrivals. In September alone, India led with over 30,000 arrivals, comprising 26 percent of the total, followed by Chinese tourists as the second-largest group with over 8,000 arrivals.
About the Policy:
Recognizing the urgent need to recover its share of the tourism market, which was severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, Sri Lanka’s Cabinet of Ministers has said to approve this move. Significantly, the aim is to stay competitive with other highly sought-after Asian tourist destinations, many of which have also introduced free visa policies.
In addition to the free visa initiative, the Sri Lankan government has also unveiled a series of other tourism promotion programs to rejuvenate an industry hit by multiple challenges, including the Easter Sunday Attack, the pandemic, and a subsequent economic crisis.
Key measures approved by the Cabinet of Ministers include:
- Pilot Project for Free Tourist Visas: Travelers from the seven mentioned countries will now enjoy free tourist visas until March 31, 2024.
- One-Time Ticket Packages: Foreign tourists can opt to purchase one-time ticket packages, available at the airport or online. These packages provide easy access to Sri Lanka’s world heritage sites and historical landmarks, which typically charge admission fees.
- Sri Lanka Railways Tourist Coaches: The program streamlines the travel experience for foreign tourists by offering the convenience of purchasing tickets for Sri Lanka Railways’ tourist coaches, either at the airport or through an online platform.
Moreover, as this program unfolds, Sri Lanka aims to welcome an increasing number of tourists, with a long-term goal of attracting 5 million visitors annually over the next three years.
