The defence relationship between India and the United States is evolving rapidly, with significant advancements in operational and industrial cooperation, the Pentagon stated amidst the ongoing transition from the Joe Biden administration to President-elect Donald Trump. Ely Ratner, Assistant Secretary of Defence for Indo-Pacific Security Affairs, highlighted the strengthening ties during a recent news conference, describing the partnership as “terrific and exciting.”
“The US-India defence relationship stands on its own. It is accelerating and advancing in terrific and exciting ways, both in terms of defence industrial base cooperation and operational cooperation across the services,” Ratner said. He emphasized that this growth persists even as India navigates its complex relationship with China.
The United States has designated India as a Major Defence Partner, underscoring the importance of the bilateral relationship. The Biden administration has consistently highlighted defence cooperation as a cornerstone of this partnership. Key agreements and collaborative efforts have reinforced this bond, ensuring that both nations are aligned on strategic goals.
One of the landmark agreements this year was India’s procurement of 31 General Atomics MQ-9B remotely-piloted aircraft, including 16 Sky Guardian and 15 Sea Guardian drones. These state-of-the-art systems, along with their associated equipment, are set to significantly bolster India’s intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities across all domains. This development marks a pivotal step in India’s efforts to modernize its armed forces.
Additionally, India and the US finalized the Security of Supply Arrangement (SOSA) in 2024. This agreement enhances the mutual supply of defence goods and services, ensuring reliability and cooperation in defence procurement. In September, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Joe Biden committed to advancing discussions on harmonizing their respective defence procurement systems, a move aimed at facilitating reciprocal defence trade and collaboration.
The growing defence partnership is seen as a critical element of the broader India-US strategic relationship, which also spans trade, technology, and geopolitical stability in the Indo-Pacific region. The alignment of defence strategies and procurement processes is expected to further strengthen this collaboration, ensuring that both nations are better equipped to address shared security challenges.
As India and the US deepen their defence ties, the partnership reflects a shared commitment to advancing security, stability, and innovation. With key agreements in place and strategic discussions underway, the relationship is poised to reach new heights in the coming years, reinforcing its role as a vital pillar of global security cooperation.
