The day after filing her nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan, senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi penned an emotional letter to the people of her parliamentary constituency Raebareli.
In her heartfelt letter, Sonia Gandhi elaborated on her decision not to contest the Lok Sabha Polls from Raebareli. She expressed gratitude to the people of Raebareli for their unwavering trust in her.
Originally written in Hindi, the letter shared by Sonia Gandhi reads, “I am proud to say that whatever I am today, I owe it to you, and I have always done my best to honor your trust. Due to health and age issues, I have decided not to contest the next Lok Sabha elections.”
Sonia Gandhi mentioned how the people of Raebareli have steadfastly supported the Congress party through thick and thin, from electing Feroze Gandhi to Indira Gandhi and now herself. She expressed her deep connection to Raebareli, acknowledging that her roots are deeply embedded there.
She further added, “I know you will stand by me and my family in the future, just as you have in the past. Although I won’t have the opportunity to serve you directly after this decision, my heart and soul will always remain with you.”
It is pertinent to note that given the Congress party’s long-standing association with Raebareli, speculation arises about who will be the new candidate from the constituency. While, considering the family’s strong ties with the area, sources close to the matter have informed that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s name is being considered prominently for this role.
Moreover, after serving five terms as a Lok Sabha MP, it will be the first time for the 77-year-old Gandhi to serve a term in the Rajya Sabha. She will be filling the seat that will fall vacant after 91-year-old Manmohan Singh completes his tenure on April 3.
