New Delhi, 09 February : Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman held talks with International Monetary Fund (IMF) chief Kristalina Georgieva regarding the upcoming G-20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors (FMCBG) meeting.

The finance minister, in a tweet on Thursday, informed that she urged IMF Managing Director (MD) Georgieva to develop a globally coordinated approach to regulations for crypto-assets.

According to the ministry, the finance minister and Georgieva discussed the upcoming G-20 FMCBG meeting to be held in Bengaluru later this month. Sitharaman also thanked the IMF chief for the many works being done under the G-20 finance track under India’s chairmanship. She told Georgieva that India will continue to play a leadership role during the G-20 Presidency to strengthen multilateralism and global governance for a peaceful, sustainable and prosperous world for all.

According to the ministry, Georgieva congratulated India for its strong economic performance in challenging global times and its role in digitising the economy, especially in the field of digital payments. Georgieva appreciated the partnership between the IMF and India, SRTTAC and India’s contribution of $50 million to Delhi. She said that this will strengthen the role of India and IMF in capacity building in the South Asian region.

According to the Finance Ministry, the two leaders also expressed solidarity with the people affected by the horrific natural disaster in Turkey and Syria during the talks. Sitharaman told Georgieva that Prime Minister Narendra Modi attempted to extend India’s immediate support by deploying medical teams under NDRF.

Both the leaders emphasised the need to become the voice of the most vulnerable and under-represented voices through the leadership of the G-20 countries in this meeting. Sitharaman also told Georgieva that the debt issue would be at the forefront of the G-20 finance track discussions.
