Shreyas Iyer has once again proven his exceptional captaincy by leading Punjab Kings to their first IPL playoff appearance in 11 years, setting a remarkable milestone in Indian Premier League history. This achievement marks Shreyas Iyer as the only captain to guide three different IPL teams to the playoffs, cementing his reputation as one of the league’s most impactful leaders. Despite his on-field success, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar highlighted the lack of credit Iyer received after Kolkata Knight Riders’ title win last year and called for a fairer recognition of his role.

Shreyas Iyer’s Unique Captaincy Record

Shreyas Iyer’s journey to this landmark has been nothing short of inspiring. After recovering from a back injury that kept him out of the 2023 IPL season, Shreyas Iyer made a strong comeback by leading the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the IPL title in 2024. However, despite this success, KKR released him before the mega auction, where Punjab Kings acquired him for a staggering INR 26.75 crore. Shreyas Iyer repaid their faith by steering PBKS to a long-awaited playoff berth, ending the franchise’s 11-year drought. This feat made him the first captain in IPL history to guide three different franchises to the playoffs, including Delhi Capitals, KKR, and now Punjab Kings.

Sunil Gavaskar’s Critique on Recognition

Former India great Sunil Gavaskar expressed his concerns about the way credit was distributed after KKR’s championship win. He pointed out that Shreyas Iyer’s leadership on the field was overshadowed by praise directed towards the team’s mentor, Gautam Gambhir. Gavaskar stressed that the captain’s role is pivotal during the game and deserves primary recognition rather than giving excessive credit to someone off the field. In contrast to last year’s scenario, Gavaskar appreciated that Iyer is now receiving fair acknowledgment for his contributions, unlike the disproportionate credit given to Ricky Ponting during Punjab’s recent performances.

Shreyas Iyer’s current season is also remarkable from a personal standpoint. Riding high on his excellent form from the Champions Trophy, where he was India’s leading run-scorer, Shreyas Iyer continued his impressive batting streak in the IPL. He scored 435 runs in 12 matches at a striking rate of 174.70, including four half-centuries, leading Punjab Kings with his bat and captaincy to their first playoff qualification since 2014. The team’s recent win against Rajasthan Royals further solidified their spot in the playoffs after a tight competition with Gujarat Titans and Delhi Capitals.

Shreyas Iyer’s journey reflects resilience and leadership, underlining his growing stature as a crucial figure in Indian cricket both on and off the field.
