The recent vandalism at Mumbai’s Habitat Studio has sparked controversy, with Shiv Sena leader Rahool Kanal and 11 others being arrested for damaging the venue following a contentious joke by comedian Kunal KLanding Pagesamra. Rahool Kanal, a member of the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction, claimed the act was spontaneous and not premeditated. He justified the actions by stating that the studio’s owner, Balraj, allegedly misbehaved with them when they visited to discuss the issue.
The incident unfolded after Kamra’s stand-up performance at the Habitat Comedy Club in the Unicontinental Hotel in Khar, where he allegedly referred to Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde as a “gaddar” (traitor). The remark triggered backlash from Rahool Kanal and his associates, leading to the attack on the venue. Despite the arrests, all 12 individuals were granted bail within hours of being taken into custody.
Rahool Kanal defended his actions, stating that he had no intention of resorting to violence but was provoked by the behavior of the studio owner. “We initially reached out to Balraj to inquire about the show, but he was dismissive and arrogant. His response triggered the incident,” Rahool Kanal told The Indian Express. He also emphasized that he has been a supporter of artists, including Kunal Kamra and Munawar Faruqui, but took offense to the content of Kamra’s performance.
The Mumbai Police have been investigating the case, with Rahool Kanal filing an additional complaint against Kamra at the Khar police station. In his complaint, Rahool Kanal requested an inquiry into the financial transactions of Kamra’s YouTube channel, alleging irregularities that could indicate the movement of funds for unlawful purposes. The police have yet to comment on the validity of these claims.
Rahool Kanal has been an active political figure in Maharashtra. Once a close aide of Aaditya Thackeray and a key member of Shiv Sena’s youth wing, Yuva Sena, he switched allegiance to Eknath Shinde’s faction in July 2023. Rahool Kanal is also a well-known restaurateur and philanthropist, running the popular Bandra-based restaurant Bhaijaanz, which is associated with Bollywood superstar Salman Khan. Additionally, he operates the NGO ‘I Love Mumbai’ and was previously a trustee of the Shri Saibaba Sansthan Trust.
The vandalism incident has drawn mixed reactions, with some condemning the attack on free speech while others defending Rahool Kanal’s stance. As the controversy continues, the focus remains on the broader implications of such acts on political discourse and artistic expression in India.
