A major lapse in security preparedness ahead of India’s 79th Independence Day celebrations has resulted in the suspension of seven Delhi Police personnel. The officers, responsible for the security of the iconic Red Fort, failed to detect a dummy explosive device during a surprise security drill. The incident has raised serious concerns about the readiness and vigilance of law enforcement agencies during one of the most high-profile national events of the year.

Security Breach During Routine Drill

As part of regular drills conducted by the Delhi Police in preparation for Independence Day, the Special Cell carried out a mock operation on Saturday. Officers from the unit, disguised as civilians, successfully entered the Red Fort premises carrying a dummy bomb. The simulation was designed to test alertness and the robustness of existing security measures in place.

However, the personnel stationed at the Red Fort during the drill failed to identify or intercept the planted device. Following this serious oversight, disciplinary action was swiftly taken, resulting in the suspension of seven police officials, including both constables and head constables.

Authorities stated that these drills are part of standard protocol in the run-up to national celebrations, especially for events hosted at sensitive and symbolically important locations like the Red Fort, where the Prime Minister traditionally hoists the national flag and addresses the nation. The failure to detect the dummy bomb not only exposed gaps in existing security protocols but also triggered an internal review of preparedness across security teams stationed in the capital.

Red Fort Declared High-Security Zone Amid Heightened Preparations

In the week preceding Independence Day, the Red Fort and surrounding areas have been declared a high-security zone. With VIP movement, international attention, and national significance, the Delhi Police is coordinating with central agencies to enforce multi-layered security arrangements across all critical points in the vicinity.

The security blueprint for this year includes some of the most advanced surveillance measures implemented to date. For the first time, five types of surveillance cameras will be deployed as part of a high-tech monitoring system. Among them, headcount cameras will be utilized to keep real-time track of crowd density and highlight any suspicious object or movement. These intelligent systems are supported by advanced vehicle scanning mechanisms and high-definition video analytics, ensuring that all vehicular entry points around the Red Fort are closely monitored.

Apart from technological upgrades, an on-ground census of residents in nearby areas is being conducted to map identities and enhance intelligence gathering. The police have intensified patrolling, coordinated checkpoints, and created a buffer perimeter around the Red Fort. The overall effort reflects a strategy combining human intelligence with digital surveillance, aimed at mitigating any potential threat.

Arrest of Bangladeshi Nationals Sparks Additional Concerns

In a separate development that further intensified security concerns, five Bangladeshi nationals were apprehended by the Delhi Police on Monday. According to officials, they were caught attempting to forcefully enter the Red Fort premises. Initial findings suggest that the individuals, aged between 20 and 25, had been working as laborers in different parts of Delhi.

The police recovered documents from the suspects that indicate Bangladeshi nationality. The group’s unauthorized and suspicious presence near a high-security zone during this sensitive period raised red flags among security agencies. A formal investigation is now underway to determine their motive and how they managed to reach the location despite elevated security measures in place.

The arrest has led to an intensified probe into possible illegal immigration routes and gaps in local enforcement. Officials are also checking whether there is any broader network at play, or if the incident is isolated. Enhanced background checks and data collection initiatives have since been launched in labor colonies and construction sites around Delhi to identify undocumented migrants.

These back-to-back incidents—the dummy bomb oversight and the attempted intrusion by foreign nationals—have added urgency to the Delhi Police’s Independence Day security strategy. Every year, the event commands massive deployment, including NSG commandos, snipers on rooftops, aerial surveillance, and counter-drone systems. However, these recent breaches suggest a need for continued assessment and real-time testing of existing protocols.

While the disciplinary action against the suspended personnel sends a strong message of accountability, the focus has now shifted to tightening the loopholes and ensuring that all units operate at maximum alert levels in the days leading up to August 15. The Red Fort remains not only a physical venue for celebration but also a symbolic target that demands unrelenting vigilance from every branch of security and intelligence services operating in the capital.
