‘I am CJI Chandrachud speaking, send 500 rupees’—this message is becoming increasingly viral on social media. This is the new method of scammers, in which fraud is being done in the name of CJI Chandrachud. According to a post on social media platform X, a person claiming to be Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud has tried to cheat Rs 500. The message reads, “Hello, I am CJI and there is an important meeting of the Collegium and I am stuck in Connaught Place, can you send 500 rupees for a cab? I will return the money when I reach the court.” The Supreme Court has taken cognizance of this viral post and registered a complaint of cyber scam on the instructions of the Chief Justice. Recently, many cases of cyber fraud have come to light, where people have lost lakhs of rupees by criminals through several digital methods. In view of the increasing cases, RBI had proposed to set up a ‘Digital Payments Intelligence Platform’, which will use technology to reduce the risks associated with payment scams. According to the annual report of the Reserve Bank, the number of financial scams reported by banks has increased rapidly, increasing by 166 percent year-on-year to 36,075 cases in the financial year 2023-24. During this period, the maximum number of people and the highest amount of fraud has been done through online mode in Uttar Pradesh.
According to a report, India is included in the list of countries with the highest number of active cyber fraud cases.
