In a significant cultural shift, Saudi Arabia hosted its first-ever fashion show featuring swimsuit models, marking a notable departure from its conservative dress norms of the past. The event, held on Friday, showcased designs by Moroccan fashion designer Yasmina Qanzal, introducing bold one-piece swimsuits in vibrant shades of red, beige, and blue.
“This swimsuit fashion show in Saudi Arabia is a historic moment,” remarked Qanzal, emphasizing the significance of the event and expressing her gratitude for being part of it.
The groundbreaking showcase took place as part of the inaugural Red Sea Fashion Week at the luxurious St Regis Red Sea Resort, situated along Saudi Arabia’s western coast. The resort, a component of the Red Sea Global project, aligns with the ambitious Vision 2030 reform program spearheaded by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
Prince Mohammed’s leadership has ushered in a series of transformative social and economic reforms, aimed at modernizing the kingdom and diversifying its economy. These reforms include the reintroduction of cinemas, the organization of mixed-gender events like music festivals, and the sidelining of conservative practices such as the presence of stick-wielding religious police in public spaces.
Shouq Mohammed, a Syrian fashion influencer who attended the show, praised Saudi Arabia’s efforts to embrace global fashion trends and foster growth in its fashion and tourism sectors.
According to a report by the official Saudi Fashion Commission, the fashion industry contributed significantly to the kingdom’s economy in 2022, generating $12.5 billion and employing 230,000 individuals.
Attendees of the historic event, including French influencer Raphael Simacourbe, commended the bold step taken by Saudi Arabia in organizing the swimwear fashion show. Simacourbe noted the cultural significance of the event within the Saudi context, describing it as a brave and commendable move.
