According to a report from the International Data Corporation (IDC), Apple experienced a significant decline in iPhone shipments during the first quarter of 2024, with Chinese competitors Xiaomi and Transsion exhibiting double-digit growth. Apple shipped 50.1 million units during this period, marking a 9.6% decrease compared to the 55.4 million shipments in the same quarter the previous year. Among the top five smartphone brands, Apple witnessed the most substantial year-on-year decline.
In contrast, Samsung reclaimed its position as the leading smartphone manufacturer in the first quarter, boasting a 20.8% market share and shipping nearly the same number of units as the previous year, totaling 60.1 million. Apple’s market share, which surpassed Samsung in 2023, declined to 17.3% from 20.7% year-on-year.
While IDC anticipates Apple and Samsung to maintain their dominance in the high-end market segment, the resurgence of Huawei in China and the notable growth of Xiaomi, Transsion, OPPO/OnePlus, and vivo suggest that both companies may seek opportunities to expand and diversify their offerings.
Xiaomi’s shipments surged by 33.8% to 40.8 million units in the first quarter, while Transsion experienced an impressive 84.9% increase to 28.5 million units. Transsion, the parent company of Tecno, Itel, and Infinix brands, has quietly emerged as the fifth-largest smartphone manufacturer globally.
Based on first-quarter shipments, Xiaomi, Transsion, and OPPO secured the third, fourth, and fifth positions in terms of market share, with percentages of 14.1%, 9.9%, and 8.7%, respectively.
Despite these advancements, OPPO witnessed an 8.5% decline in shipments to 25.2 million units during the first quarter.
Tech giants Huawei and Honor, though not included in the top five list, demonstrated strong performance in the first six weeks of 2024, as reported by Counterpoint Research. Huawei’s consumer business, in particular, is experiencing a resurgence with the launch of its Mate 60 smartphone.
Globally, total smartphone shipments in the first quarter increased by 7.8% year-over-year to 289.4 million units, marking the third consecutive quarter of shipment growth.
