Congress veteran Sam Pitroda has claimed that his virtual address at IIT Roorkee was disrupted by hackers who infiltrated the video call and streamed explicit content. The incident, according to Pitroda, took place during the Cognizant event at IIT Roorkee on February 1, 2025, where he was addressing students and faculty members via Zoom. He stated that within minutes of his speech beginning, the video link was compromised, leading to the immediate termination of the event. Pitroda expressed concern over the security breach, calling it a disturbing occurrence, particularly in academic institutions meant for learning and intellectual growth. He emphasized the significance of cybersecurity and digital vigilance in light of the incident.
The claim has surfaced at a time when Pitroda is already embroiled in controversy over his earlier remarks regarding a supposed lecture at IIT Ranchi. The Congress leader had shared a video of a podcast on his X account on February 22, in which he discussed the importance of free speech in a democracy. During the podcast, he claimed that while speaking to hundreds of students at “IIT Ranchi,” hackers had disrupted his address by streaming pornography. However, his statement was soon fact-checked by the Centre, leading to strong rebuttals from the Ministry of Education. The ministry pointed out that no such institution as IIT Ranchi exists. Instead, Jharkhand’s capital city has an Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), which, according to the ministry, has no record of inviting Pitroda for any lecture, whether in-person or virtual.
In its statement, the Education Ministry dismissed Pitroda’s claim as “baseless and reckless,” asserting that such remarks could damage the reputation of a highly esteemed educational institution. The ministry further underscored the importance of responsible communication by public figures, particularly concerning allegations that cast aspersions on academic institutions without evidence. The rebuttal from the government has intensified scrutiny on Pitroda’s statements, with critics questioning the credibility of his claims.
Pitroda, a key figure in the Congress party and a longtime technology advisor, has not yet responded to the government’s counterclaims regarding the non-existence of IIT Ranchi. However, his latest allegations concerning IIT Roorkee have further fueled the debate over cybersecurity in virtual academic events. Experts have highlighted the increasing risk of cyber threats in online conferences, emphasizing the need for robust security protocols to prevent such incidents.
As the controversy continues, political analysts see this episode as part of the larger ongoing political discourse between the ruling party and the Congress, particularly concerning issues related to free speech, digital governance, and institutional integrity. With cybersecurity threats rising in virtual platforms, institutions and policymakers may now be compelled to adopt stricter measures to safeguard online academic engagements from malicious intrusions. Meanwhile, Pitroda’s claims remain a focal point of debate, drawing reactions from both supporters and critics in the political and academic spheres.
