External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has advanced India’s strategic outreach by meeting his counterparts from Russia, Iran, and Mexico on the sidelines of the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, underlining India’s commitment to deepening bilateral ties and engaging actively on global and regional issues. The meetings, held on Sunday, reflect India’s ongoing diplomatic efforts within the expanded BRICS platform, now representing 11 major emerging economies and nearly half the world’s population.

During his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, S Jaishankar focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation between India and Russia, reviewing developments in West Asia, and discussing multilateral engagements through BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). The meeting with Lavrov comes amid evolving geopolitical shifts and continued India-Russia cooperation in sectors including defence, energy, and technology, reflecting the depth of the strategic partnership both countries share. S Jaishankar posted on X, “Good to meet with FM Sergey Lavrov of Russia on the sidelines of #BRICS2025,” signalling continuity in high-level dialogues despite changing global dynamics.

Focus on Regional Developments with Iran

In his discussion with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, S Jaishankar concentrated on the ongoing regional developments impacting West Asia, underscoring India’s consistent position on peace and stability in the region. Iran’s inclusion in BRICS in 2024 has opened additional channels for structured dialogue within the multilateral framework, allowing India to engage with Tehran on matters of connectivity, energy security, and regional stability while balancing its interests with the larger BRICS agenda. S Jaishankar remarked after the meeting, “Glad to meet FM @araghchi of Iran this evening. Our conversation focused on recent regional developments,” capturing the essential nature of India-Iran dialogue amid regional flux.

Expanding Cooperation with Mexico in Health, Technology, and Space

S Jaishankar also met the Secretary of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, Juan Ramon de la Fuente, discussing ways to advance the bilateral partnership with a specific focus on health, digital cooperation, technology exchange, and space collaboration. The meeting signifies India’s strategic engagement with Latin American countries under its diversified foreign policy outreach, aligning with mutual interests in technological growth and health innovation. Both nations explored opportunities for expanding their partnerships to contribute to sustainable development goals while reinforcing their commitment to multilateral cooperation under BRICS.

The 17th BRICS Summit has gained significant attention due to the grouping’s recent expansion, including Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates in 2024, and Indonesia joining in 2025. This expansion has positioned BRICS as a critical bloc in global geopolitics, representing around 49.5% of the global population, nearly 40% of the world’s GDP, and 26% of global trade. India’s active participation in the summit reflects its intent to contribute to shaping a multipolar world order, focusing on economic growth, peace, and regional stability while ensuring its national interests are safeguarded through constructive dialogues with key partners.

The meetings held by S Jaishankar on the sidelines of the summit also reflect India’s balancing act in its foreign policy, engaging actively with diverse partners amidst complex global challenges. The discussions with Russia centred on energy security, defence cooperation, and technology, reaffirming the traditional partnership, while the meeting with Iran addressed critical regional issues amid shifting dynamics in West Asia. Meanwhile, the engagement with Mexico highlighted India’s efforts to diversify its diplomatic relations beyond its immediate neighbourhood and traditional partners, looking towards strengthening its outreach in Latin America in sectors vital for future growth.

S Jaishankar’s engagements in Brazil also indicate India’s commitment to a reformed multilateralism where emerging economies play a central role in addressing global challenges, including sustainable development, climate action, equitable trade practices, and digital cooperation. The emphasis on health and space collaboration with Mexico aligns with India’s domestic priorities of technological advancement and health security while showcasing its readiness to share expertise and resources with partner nations under South-South cooperation frameworks.

The discussions also underline the importance India places on multilateral forums like BRICS and SCO to address critical global issues, positioning itself as a bridge between the Global South and established global powers. The inclusion of Iran and the ongoing cooperation with Russia under the BRICS and SCO frameworks reflect India’s nuanced approach towards balancing its relations while safeguarding its strategic autonomy in the global order.

Through these strategic meetings, S Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s commitment to leveraging multilateral platforms to advance its global standing while deepening bilateral engagements that complement its domestic development agenda. The active participation in the 17th BRICS Summit and productive bilateral discussions with Russia, Iran, and Mexico are a testament to India’s proactive diplomacy and its vision for a cooperative and inclusive global orde
