In a surprizing turn of events, Ruturaj Gaikwad succeeded Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the new captain of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK),
The Indian Premier League (IPL) made the revelation in a post on social media platform X, unveiling Gaikwad as CSK’s new skipper ahead of their clash against the Royal Challengers Bangalore.
“Presenting @ChennaiIPL’s Captain – @Ruutu1331,” the IPL announced on X, along with a picture featuring all the captains posing with the IPL trophy. Gaikwad, recognized for his elegant stroke play, has represented India in six ODIs and 19 T20s. Since his debut with CSK in 2020, Gaikwad has emerged as a prominent figure for the five-time IPL champions, featuring in 52 games. Notably, the stylish opener had an outstanding run in the previous season, amassing 590 runs in 16 matches at an impressive strike rate of 147.50.
In a statement released following the announcement, CSK confirmed the leadership transition, citing Gaikwad’s integral role within the team since 2019. The statement read, “MS Dhoni has handed over Chennai Super Kings’ captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the start of TATA IPL 2024. Ruturaj has been an integral part of Chennai Super Kings since 2019 and has played 52 matches in IPL during this period.”
“The team looks forward to the upcoming season,” the statement concluded.
It is pertinent to note that the decision to appoint Gaikwad as captain marks a significant shift in leadership for CSK, with Dhoni’s tenure as captain coming to an end. Dhoni, a stalwart of Indian cricket and one of the most successful captains in IPL history, has led CSK to multiple titles and has been an iconic figure for the franchise since its inception. However, with the baton now passed to Gaikwad, CSK will embark on a new era under his leadership, aiming to continue their legacy of success in the IPL.
