In a recent statement reported by TASS, Alexander Bortnikov, the head of Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), accused Ukrainian military intelligence of direct involvement in the deadly attack on a concert hall near Moscow. Over 140 people were killed in the incident.
Alexander Bortnikov’s claims, while reiterated by Russia in the past, lacked specific evidence to support his assertions. According to the state news agency, Alexander Bortnikov stated, “The investigation is ongoing, but it is already safe to say that Ukrainian military intelligence is directly involved in this attack.”
Additionally, Alexander Bortnikov accused the NATO military alliance of aiding the transfer of “mercenaries and militants of international terrorist organizations from the Middle East, North Africa, and Afghanistan” to Ukraine to combat Russian forces.
The concert hall massacre in March, for which the Islamic State claimed responsibility, has been a subject of international scrutiny. U.S. officials have previously stated that intelligence suggested the involvement of the network’s Afghan branch, Islamic State Khorasan. However, Ukraine has consistently denied any connection to the attack.
Alexander Bortnikov, as cited by TASS, alleged that Islamic State Khorasan had a role in coordinating the attackers’ actions and further claimed direct involvement by Ukrainian military intelligence.
While these allegations are serious, they come amidst heightened tensions between Russia and Ukraine, with both sides engaging in a war of words amid ongoing conflicts in the region. The accusations serve to underscore the complexities and challenges facing efforts to resolve the situation diplomatically.
