A Russian passenger plane carrying 95 people caught fire upon landing at Antalya Airport in Turkey on Sunday evening, prompting swift emergency response efforts that ensured the safety of all onboard. The Sukhoi Superjet 100, operated by Azimuth Airlines, had departed from Sochi with 89 passengers and six crew members, according to Turkey’s transportation ministry.

The incident occurred at 9:34 p.m. local time when the aircraft landed and an engine caught fire, leading the pilot to issue an emergency call. Airport rescue and firefighting crews responded rapidly, extinguishing the blaze and evacuating everyone from the aircraft without injuries. Video footage from the scene captured flames engulfing part of the plane as emergency vehicles rushed to the site.

Azimuth Airlines later stated that the aircraft experienced a rough landing caused by “wind shear,” a sudden change in wind speed or direction that can create dangerous conditions during takeoff or landing. The transportation ministry confirmed that the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but no immediate explanation was available.

As rescue efforts unfolded, Antalya Airport temporarily suspended arrivals, rerouting flights to a military runway while departures continued. Efforts to remove the damaged aircraft from the runway were underway to resume normal airport operations as soon as possible.

The Sukhoi Superjet 100 is a Russian-made regional aircraft that has faced scrutiny in the past due to safety concerns. While the exact circumstances of this incident remain unclear, the swift and effective response by airport authorities prevented what could have been a catastrophic event. The transportation ministry emphasized that no passengers or crew were harmed in the emergency, underscoring the efficiency of the evacuation process.

This incident has drawn attention to the challenges of handling emergencies involving mechanical failures or weather-related conditions like wind shear. Aviation experts are likely to focus on whether operational protocols were followed and what improvements can be made to prevent such occurrences in the future.

For Azimuth Airlines, this marks a significant test of its safety reputation, as the airline works to determine the root cause of the incident. The timely and coordinated response in Antalya serves as a reminder of the critical role emergency services play in ensuring passenger safety during unforeseen events.
