A controversy has erupted in Himachal Pradesh after an audio clip allegedly defaming Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was played on a state-run bus. The incident, which occurred on November 5, involved a bus operating between Dhalli and Sanjauli. The Himachal Pradesh Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) launched an investigation after the complaint was raised to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), prompting swift action against the bus driver and conductor involved.
The HRTC has issued legal notices to both the driver and the conductor, demanding explanations within three days regarding the claims. Both staff members have denied the allegations, stating that no such audio, which was reportedly critical of Rahul Gandhi and other opposition leaders, was played during the bus ride. Despite their denials, the matter has ignited a fierce debate in the state, drawing attention from both political sides.
The incident has triggered sharp criticism from the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has accused the Congress-led state government of misusing its authority and turning a trivial issue into a political spectacle. Former BJP Minister Sukhram Chaudhary condemned the government for taking action against ordinary employees over such an issue, stating, “It is wrong to harass ordinary employees like drivers and conductors over such matters. Himachal Pradesh is becoming a subject of ridicule due to such actions.”
Chaudhary further criticized the government for neglecting essential issues, claiming that development in the state had stagnated. He pointed out that public welfare schemes and crucial matters like health facilities and infrastructure were being ignored in favor of focusing on what he described as “trivial issues.”
Adding to the chorus of criticism, BJP MLA Sudhir Sharma from Dharamshala also weighed in, questioning the rationale behind the incident. “A driver is responsible for driving, not monitoring what passengers listen to. If the government is so concerned, it should deploy marshals on buses to handle such matters,” he said.
In response to the controversy, the HRTC indicated that disciplinary action would be considered against the bus driver and conductor if their explanations are deemed unsatisfactory. The corporation emphasized that playing political content in public spaces could violate government regulations and potentially disrupt public order.
As the investigation continues, the issue remains a point of contention, further escalating the political divide between the ruling Congress and the opposition BJP in Himachal Pradesh.
