As India advances in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, concerns over the fitness of key players have emerged, with captain Rohit Sharma reportedly nursing a hamstring injury. The issue arose during India’s high-stakes encounter against Pakistan in Dubai, where Rohit briefly left the field before returning to open the innings. Despite the discomfort, he contributed a quickfire 20 off 15 balls as India comfortably chased down Pakistan’s total at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

According to reports, Rohit Sharma was absent from India’s latest training session, opting to sit out and avoid further aggravating the injury. With the semifinals approaching, team management appears to be taking a cautious approach to his workload. The 37-year-old, known for his aggressive starts at the top of the order, is a crucial asset to India’s batting lineup, and any potential setback could impact the team’s prospects in the knockout stages.

Adding to India’s concerns, vice-captain and opening partner Shubman Gill also skipped the practice session. The 24-year-old, who announced his arrival in the tournament with a commanding century in India’s opening match, is reportedly unwell. While the specifics of his condition remain unclear, his absence from training suggests that the team might have to reassess its plans for the upcoming fixture.

In positive news, wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has recovered from a bout of fever and was seen batting in the nets. Pant, a key figure in India’s middle order, has been instrumental in providing stability and acceleration when needed. His return to training will be a relief for the Indian think tank, especially with the crucial semifinal stage drawing near.

Meanwhile, fast bowler Mohammed Shami has seemingly dispelled concerns over his fitness after he walked off the field during the Pakistan match, having bowled just three overs. The experienced pacer, who appeared to have an ankle issue, returned to bowl five more overs in that game. During the latest training session, Shami was seen bowling at full intensity in the nets, alleviating fears of any serious injury. His presence will be vital for India, especially given his ability to strike early and provide breakthroughs in crunch moments.

With India having already secured a spot in the semifinals, there is growing speculation over potential changes to the playing XI for their final group-stage match against New Zealand on March 2. The winner of the clash will top Group A, but India might consider resting key players to ensure they remain in peak condition for the knockout rounds. Given Rohit Sharma’s injury concerns and Shubman Gill’s health issue, the team management could look at alternative opening combinations or tweak the batting order.

India has fielded an unchanged lineup for its first two matches, both of which ended in dominant victories. In their tournament opener, they chased down Bangladesh’s target with six wickets to spare, followed by another clinical six-wicket win against Pakistan. The team’s form has been impressive, with both the batting and bowling units delivering under pressure. However, fitness concerns will play a key role in determining how India approaches the remainder of the tournament.

As the Champions Trophy nears its decisive phase, India’s focus will be on managing player workload while maintaining the momentum that has seen them emerge as one of the strongest contenders. Fans and analysts alike will be keenly watching how the team handles its injury concerns, particularly with Rohit Sharma’s leadership and batting prowess being integral to their campaign. The upcoming clash against New Zealand will serve as a final test before the high-pressure semifinals, and team India will look to strike the right balance between resting key players and maintaining their winning rhythm.
