Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has issued an apology for his recent remarks regarding the bail granted to Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha in the Delhi liquor policy case. This apology follows a stern reprimand from the Supreme Court over his comments suggesting a political deal between the BJP and BRS facilitated K Kavitha’s release.

In a statement posted on X, Revanth Reddy expressed his “highest regard and full faith” in the Indian judiciary, clarifying that his earlier comments were not intended to question the court’s wisdom. He acknowledged that his remarks, made on August 27, 2024, about a potential ‘deal’ for K Kavitha’s bail, might have been misinterpreted. “I unconditionally express my regret for the statements reflected in the press reports,” Revanth Reddy stated, emphasizing his respect for the judicial process and its independence.

The Supreme Court had granted bail to K Kavitha in the Delhi excise policy case, asserting that prolonged pre-trial incarceration should not be a de facto punishment. The court’s decision was made amidst allegations that the BRS had supported the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, with Revanth Reddy suggesting a possible connection between this support and K Kavitha’s bail.

The Supreme Court reacted strongly to Revanth Reddy’s comments, expressing concern that such statements could undermine public trust in the judiciary. A three-judge bench, led by Justice B.R. Gavai, criticized the Chief Minister’s remarks, questioning the propriety of his comments and stressing that judicial decisions are made independently of political considerations. “Do we pass orders after consultations with political parties?” the court questioned, reflecting its displeasure at the attempt to link judicial decisions with political rivalries.

Justice Gavai also underscored the fundamental duty of political figures to respect judicial institutions, asserting that the court operates based on conscience and legal principles, not political influence. The Supreme Court’s rebuke highlights the importance of maintaining the independence of the judiciary and the need for political leaders to uphold the integrity of legal processes.

Revanth Reddy’s apology and the Supreme Court’s response underscore the delicate balance between political discourse and judicial respect, emphasizing the need for responsible statements from public officials regarding legal matters.
