Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior was named the Men’s Player of the Year at FIFA’s The Best Awards, while Barcelona’s Aitana Bonmati continued her dominance in women’s soccer, claiming the top honor once again. The event, held in Doha, saw the Brazilian winger beat Manchester City’s Rodri, who finished second, by a narrow margin of five points.
Vinicius, who traveled to Doha with Real Madrid for the Intercontinental Cup final against Pachuca, expressed his immense joy at the recognition. Speaking in Portuguese, he said, “I don’t even know where to begin. It was so far away that it seemed impossible to get here. I was a kid who only played football barefoot on the streets of Sao Goncalo, close to poverty and crime.”
The Brazilian star reflected on his journey from humble beginnings to the pinnacle of world football. For him, this achievement was a testament to the dreams of many children who believe their goals are out of reach. “Getting here is something very important to me. I’m doing it for many children who think that everything is impossible and who think they can’t get here,” he added.
In an emotional Instagram post following his victory, Vinicius shared his feelings of triumph and resilience, implicitly addressing the challenges and criticism he has faced in his career. “Today I am writing to that boy who saw so many idols lift this trophy… your time has come,” he wrote. “Or rather, my time has come. The time to say … yes, I am the best player in the world and I fought hard for it.”
He also responded to detractors who had tried to undermine his success. “They tried and still try to invalidate me, to diminish me. But they are not prepared. No one is going to tell me who I should fight for, how I should behave,” Vinicius stated, making it clear that he would not let others dictate his path.
As the Brazilian winger was celebrated for his outstanding performances on the field, Aitana Bonmati once again claimed the Women’s Player of the Year award. Bonmati’s recognition came after another remarkable season with Barcelona, solidifying her status as one of the top players in women’s football. The success of both Vinicius and Bonmati at the FIFA Best Awards underlined the exceptional talent in world football, as well as the continuous evolution of the game for both men and women.
